Here's a couple of photos taken from yesterdays activities. Just time aligning some stuff. Billy Sticks is the Guy in the photo.

How are you time aligning bass?

Have you read Bob McCarthy et al regarding the massive problems with aligning using only time/impulse response for low end given the huge bandwidth at play?

Impulse response will give accurate results if you know what to do with it.

I use my Iasys machine, it's been mentioned many times on here. It's a dedicated machine. I'm doing another session today with someone else's gear.
Regarding the Iasys. look it up on the website, you will see how it works.

Mr McC was here recently giving a Meyer lecture I believe..... The system techs I work with were not very impressed by his lecture or his beliefs which go against their collected years of knowledge of quickly and correctly time aligning big PA`s....?

That doesn't mean he isn't right though? New or different methods are always going to rock the boat a bit. In my, admittedly relatively limited testing, proper phase alignment sounds a hell of a lot better than just IR based measurements.

Incubus aligned finally? :p

It doesn't matter which method one uses, as long as the result is right. I can align system with several different methods and get same results so i don't have to rely on one thing only. It's not what you know, but how you do it ;)

So people bought it without having any settings?

Just remember that everything is calculated from the Impulse response at the first place Wink

I just use a recorded test tone sine wave at the crossover point from Logic. Send it out to the Pa and then back in through a mic to a channel set to no output so you don't get feed back. Hit record and measure the difference on the speakers below and above that crossover point. Do the math and set the delay at the PA processor and retry to check your math. Similar to optimizing latency settings in a DAW.

I also use that method to check phase alignment, but my processor lacks a good phase adjustment so all I can do is flip polarity if necessary.

Ghetto, but it works for me.

Not at all, but it is an install system so is tailored to each venue - as it should be. Too many installs using settings off the website…

Just a reminder of what the Iasys unit looks like. This has made life very easy.

Would it also work by sending signal at crossover point, moving the speaker until peak Db is reached?

I think you could accomplish the goal that way, but it seems difficult compared to just measuring once setting the time delay and then checking it. Also, on my stacks the mid horns would fall off the back of the FLHs because the distance difference is greater than half a meter.

Years ago before we had so many little helpers, I used to power up the Sub and the Bass, they were crossed over and overlapped, and then just drag the bass cab back over the sub, which luckily was deeper, and then watch the Spectrum Analyzer  screen and stop dragging it back when the bass peaked. Obviously, only had to do this once with a particular setup. It worked.

Anyone who says Bob Mcarthy is not absolutely a groundbreaking genius is really misinformed.

Granted he drinks the Meyer Coolaid a little too much.  But he was a student of Doug Jones whom was a  TEFF pioneer and Heiser student.   Luckily the department chair when I attended college also.

Impulse alignment without phase alignment can sound fine,  but some of us are here to take it to a higher level.  Make better gains,  and at times,  MUST prove to contractors and accousticians that proper phase and time have been attained.

Personally I use impulse response to get in the right ballpark for time alignment, ie within half a wavelength then I look at the phase slopes to fine tune.  Looking at phase alone you could end up being a whole cycle (or more) out and at low frequencies I don't find impulse reponses clear enough.

I'm sure there are various valid methods depending on what measurement equipment you have available.

I never said anything about him being a clever dude or if his techniques are correct ? Just that the techs who I spoke to  didn`t really agree with his Meyer orientated lecture or his way of time aligning stuff...

Each to their own? If it gets done quickly & efficiently and the clients / punters are happy then you`re doing your job right !
