I can't understand what's going on!!! I'm So many systems sounding BAD!!
If I'm honest, Aba Shanti was the best system I heard yesterday I'm surprised as to why systems would even attempt to play & they clearly are unable to carryout the task.
Shocking

probably just tuning yesterday for the big day
miss Aba for some reason...in fact quite a few static sounds and floats.
not fun walking for miles looking for sound system with all those crowds somehow manage to miss the chocolate brigade
was thinking of coming back today to have a proper look and listen but looking at the window would be best to stay now
will post pics later once I finish uploding them

The folded 24 horns were nuts very low , serious pressure , I want some immediately nice to see more on the scene , taller than erolls ones to, rather large beasts

There is certainly a lot of kit around these days, really good to see. I can't say I'd ever want to do a float though, I'm not convinced you get your best sound over with a float. A street thing is the one for me.

Whow would like to see those 21" hogs, read something about that on here, but never saw them! Wonder what their response & sim looks like, they must go nice & low:-) And the 24" bins sound interesting too! I heard that King earthquake has something like pd.1850 horns with 24" drivers inside.
Why didn't I ever see those boxes on here?

I`m with you Rich.
Maybe I`m missing the point but since I`ve been doing NHC ( 10 years now) it`s about providing sound for the people? It went through a phase of "rave" but has come out even stronger for the reggae / roots/ bashment/ hip-hop style as that is now more popular than ever? But the float I provide sound for is predominantly soca style which still ( IMO) is the main stay of the carnival " sound " ? So saying that just photos of reggae systems is like asking for someone to put blinkers & earmuffs on and wander about Notting Hill randomly for bank holiday weekend and take a shot if they saw any red/gold / green....?
Come on Ray.... lighten up .... there`s more to Notting Hill Carnival than that..?

Reggae Soundsystems often play, RnB, Calypso, Soca, Roots Reggae, Dancehall, Hip Hop, Jungle, Afro beats,Funky House.
The Systems are "usually" flexible enough to do all that.
Purpose of thread was to see more of the DIY Systems, as opposed to Huge piles of Branded kit, FK1,Turbo etc.

Following on from above, anyone rate any Carnival Floats, as "Particularly Heavy Sounding" ?

Ray, I think next year you should go, it will stop your fingers wearing out on the keyboard
and take a camera of course.

Ken I can't believe you put our S&M shot up!
@Lev, we weren't heavy we were insane! The sub bass from the quakes on the rear of the float didn't tale of for nearly 80m and the sides were mental with my 16 tmax drivers going balls out. Really really heavy, but also really crisp and clear in our top section with a uinform sound throughout. Definitely the best system we've had so far, roll on 2015!

Did you guys run Ken's Quakes lower than at GP?
At GP bass was loud, but sounded bit hard, not warm, deep sub notes.

The gremlins were really out in force at GP. I had some extensive modification/refurbishing works done on 4 of our Earthquakes and the GP outing was to see as close as possible how that stack would perform on the back of the big float.
Firstly the delays - I got Tony Rossell to come up with delays using his Iasys machine. There was no time to check them and we went straight into the rounds with those settings. It was obvious straight away that they weren't working for us as the music sounded disjointed. Throughout the evening I kept tweaking the delay settings closer to what I originally had. Sorry Tony, don't know what went wrong but your settings don't work for my system at all. I have put it all back to my original settings.
Secondly, the limiters - Someone had obviously got to them (still haven't figured out how) as all the limiters had been changed and the LMS was limiting far too early and was compressing like crazy. Took a while to sus this out but was changed later on during the event.
Thirdly the rattling - Bee has hung his head in shame regarding this as there was a loose clamp in the chamber of one of the cabs. This was a funny one as the noise seemed to coming from the cabinet below the one that was actually at fault.
The mic section - I was trying out a 16 channel Mackie that had not been out on our rig before and did not bring the rack with my old 12 channel mixer that also had the feedback destroyer. Lesson learnt the hard way there!
As I told everyone that asked the GP trip gave me the information that I needed. There were no changes made to crossover frequency for Carnival just the delays and the limiter settings. With those changes we were firing on all cylinders and had our best Carnival ever. Mitchigan and DJ Host Producer can vouch for how we sounded. The other 4 Earthquakes are now going to be modified so maybe an outing to check them out next year.

Not to insult Tony but the Iasys machine isn't very well regarded in the pro audio community. Even with my limited knowledge it is logical that no all-in-one machine can replace a proper Smaart (or equivalent) setup combined with experience, training and knowledge on how to analyze what your measurements show you and later implement the correct settings.

Explains everything I heard at GP..
One thing you missed was no snazzy disco light/light bulb to help you guys see decks in the dark.

yes I stood in the corner when we found out what the rattle was lol, I had done the bolt up as tight as I could of got it, but failed to notice the bolt had a cross thread half way down, so it would not tighten any more, leaving clamp still loose...... (school boy error) but does prove its all ways worth checking your rig to sort these small issues out.
