Subject: Po rn horn Alternative?
Date Posted: 25 October 2014 at 8:00am
Hi,
I planned to build 2x Po rn horns to go with 2x lab12 subwoofers but came to realise that the horn mouldings are no longer being sold and i'm stumped of what to do for an alternative!

I am new to building speakers and don't know a great deal about what sounds good for the project i'm wanting to achieve.

I would like to use the end product for psy-trance and bass heavy music such as dubstep/glitch at medium sized events.

If someone could help me, it would be much appreciated!

Many Thanks,
Tyler

Glitch-step, glitch-hop :)
Music other than the 4/4 beat, slappy sort of bass :)

First of all Por n horn and labsub will gave a gap in the response. Labsub is not really good above 80-90hz.
Mykeys SP12 is the only one i can think of at the moment. You will need a kick bin between then anyway.

Thanks Marjan, i had only gone off an idea a friend told me, my original idea was to have USB bins and later down the track building two Labsubs for more of a punch?

I cannot seem to find Mykeys SP12 horns/flanges anywhere though!

Ive 4 SP 10 horns for sale, built built Mykey. Use them above some decent kicks like the USB and there an awesome combo.

Are there any other alternatives in UK, apart from Mykey SP12 and non existant Porn Horns ?

Was given this link to US ebay, but horn looks bit too short, to get anywhere near 150hz.

Remember someone on here or elsewhere mentioning the quality of this manufacturer not beeing up to really usable standard, same goes for specs stated...! Too thin etc. - looks like a cheap plastic 2part mould anyways..

What's wrong with sp 12's? My ones outplayed anything I've ever heard that didn't have a large 4 figure price tag attached to them. I bought some 10's too, direct from Mike hassle free.

I know Bee also has 12" fibre glass horn in production. Not completely sure of when there available but I've heard one briefly and it was very very impressive. PM him and he'll be able to give you the finer details I'm sure.

Mykey has none in stock, know someone looking for 4x horns & I fancy playing with 2x now.

Maybe I should be looking on alibaba.com. LOL

Can't afford to have stock laying about. Good luck with Chinese horns. 1 layer of 450g and the rest is talc. They look good though😃

Get outta here.. LOL

Really issue was client needs 4x in a rush, but knew he wouldn't be expecting the price, that accompanies a certain level of performance and quality.

Was hoping Mykey might have had 3-4x demo units around.. Wink

Cool.

explain to clients that they will have them for 10 years plus. Works out very cheap if you look at it like that. These are not used twice and disposed with

It sure has to be a lot. People are crazy there days. Some even think i can just give them the right to use my brand on their products for free with the excuse that i would probably not sell many in the UK anyway. Go figure.

Wasn't that Flipside guy on the forum as well? I thought he answered some questions regarding the EGG install before.

Maybe he could give some insights in the irregularities he found.

I think he is pissed that the German guys made a very similar looking tops. So now they have to come up with something "better", so the old one has to be bad.

oops, missed that one..

120hz - no way.. more like 180 imo, same as limmers, MPA, HD etc.
b&c PE32 loaded afaik, originally, mine came with img stageline sth., later tried pe32s - what a difference :) still, not playing low enough for my liking of such a setup/concept..

Here's another alternative. Our horn is a little bit longer and has different geometry and phase plug.

Sensitivity: 105-107db (depending on speaker)
Response: 140Hz-2.000Hz
Dimensions: 510Ñ…510Ñ…510mm + back chamber 140mm
Weight: 12kg
Color: black/white
We produce it in St.-Petersburg, Russia. It costs about $200 per unit.

arnolao, it's usable up to 1.5-2kHz so the dispersion is about 60deg -6db. But I recommend to cut it on 700-800Hz where the dispersion is 90-100deg.
