You could make one but it wouldnt go low unless you made it big. Horn path and mouth effect volume and frequency cutoff of the horn part of the sound.

The minirig has a very decent hifi driver and a very solid box with a clever limited amp. Expensive but i actually think it is good value for its quality.

You are better off with a box other than horn for your project. Horns need to be big to get bass. Sorry

Quote much love for the minirig
In a way you answered your own question.

Probably as a huge amount of love and energy went into it - Into it's development and also from all the people supporting it and willing it on to succeed, and the sort of values it represents as a manufacturing business are in line with what a great many people strongly believe is sorely lacking in the world.

Someone with the right know-how could theoretically have sniped and reverse engineered it the moment it hit the shelves and at any other time, the same can be said of any new product - Everyone can pirate every piece of music and movie and get away with it but not everybody does.

I think jacking up the price to £140 on the recent update opens up a little more room in that specific area of the market for a lower cost alternative, but a direct clone or a similar but inferior quality product would still be in poor taste - there are near enough infinite ways to slice a speaker.

The closest I saw to a Minirig clone was the ill-fated Frankenspiel FS-X, that after more than a year now has still failed to materialise leaving a thousand angry backers on Kickstarter who literally appear to have lost their money over that.

The speaker I've been working on recently is quite similar to the Minirig, in the sense that it uses one high quality driver and supports 'link-ups'. I've had vague ideas of making a Minirig type product since seeing vBro's original designs for the SPH 30x/4 on the 41Hz forums around 2009, that I understand were a direct inspiration for the original Minirig.

That said, the thought never did cross my mind to clone it - it evolved out of a design I posted about before Christmas last year. It's a serious grind to bring anything like that into reality and if you start the process with a negative spark like 'a-ha, that's a good design that sells a lot of units, I'll have myself a bit of their success' you'd be correspondingly limited in what you could achieve through that*, for the inverse reason of why the Minirig has had as much success as it's had.

*Not because of what the world would allow in theory, but because of what you would allow yourself, knowing exactly what you know about the route you took and how you felt about it - but that's perhaps getting a little too philosophical for Speakerplans :D

ye the minirig is simple and effective, i think if you want a quality speaker you would pay that for it. The only thing close that sounds decent is the bose portable speakers at twice the price. I plan on making a 6inch similar version to the minirig. I have big hopes for pasce..imagine them in 5 years. I think there is such a market for portable speakers and Dave saw that.

Like you say nothing stops someone with the know how making something to give the minirig some competition

Actually what I was saying is I think lots of things stop people doing that.

If you can think through and bring into reality all the steps necessary to design build and release something like the Minirig from scratch you're probably an over-active thinker of some description with a head full of doubts and probably a head full of other potential dreams and ideas that you'd be equally capable of pursuing with the same degree of effort, so would need a seriously good reason to be able to justify stepping anywhere near someone else's ideas/work

Ofcourse a lot of thought has gone into the Minirig. Can you recommend any 6 inch full range hifi drivers?

You'll really struggle to find a driver bigger than 4 inches that can produce a full range signal without a tweeter to supplement the high end. There are full range drivers and co-axials with 'whizzer cones' but I don't know of any specifically, they're very specialist and usually rubbish except the really expensive ones.

If you don't mind adding a tweeter there are endless options - Any good quality 6 inch driver will do. B&C Speakers have a good one that's quite light - 6NDL..something www.bcspeakers.com

6inch tapped horn with solid 30Hz response...

With a bit of shimmying it about I'd guess you could make it much more hoggy.

There are lots of full range scoop designs out there. Most use a 5" or 6" driver but I know of some kits for a 3" and 4" which give bass down to 40Hz.

Trouble is... they're big so only good for home hifi. If you want portable bass - reflex or PR is the way to go.

BTW you can't just scale down a 15" horn design to fit a 6" driver. You have to keep the horn length >1.5m. hence lots of folds

If reflex is not enough impact for your taste, make a 6th order band pass sub. If the ebp suggests a closed box, you can do a 4th order bandpass. Don't make a skimpy scoop. I did it with a ten based on the eminence design which, according to the plan, can be made for a 12. It was not worth it. Tapped horns with small drivers can work because there is more going on than just the size of the horn.

I'd try go 6th order bandpass too.
i have a tiny 5inch 4th bp box and for a tiny box it bumps along quite nicely at low levels. Its about 12×6×8inch box.

It adds a little bottom end to the tv without going crazy on an oit-and-out full blown system.

You cant turn it up or it will just cook itself... think its a 25watt jobbie and sat in the corner near the tv just adds a little to the sound. Its no hi-fi but does A job.
