Hi Guys!

Seeing as I was getting inquiries from abroad and hardly any here. I thought I might as well share the formula that you can all mix, and use supplies from local resin stockists.

Items needed are...

1. Resin - catalyst
2. Chopped strand
3. Talc
4. Pigment
5. Textured roller

Resin you can even buy from builders merchants now, as it's being used on flat roofs etc

Talc you can buy in 25kg bags or just go and buy the body talc. I have used recently the talc from poundland 'imperial leather'

Chopped strand you can order from ebay. 3mm is good.

Pigment. I have used a number of pigments, but you can also buy this from ebay, as well as all the other ingredients

Roller is a throw away. If you try and clean it with acetone, the roller just expands

You don't have to use chopped strand, but I would recommend it

Pigment is mixed with the resin first, then the talc. Talc and resin mix is up to you. You want to get a consistency like custard. Not too runny. Then add the chopped strand. Mix well, with a paddle on a drill if you can. Use up a litre at a time and keep the rest on the shelf until you need it another time.

This paint is bullet proof and waterproof

Enjoy

PS: use in a ventilated area. If winter painting with no heating, then use winter resin

So roughly how long do you get before the paint sets? In my mind I have the kind of resin you use for GRP that suddenly goes runny to rock hard!

30 mins

best thing about it getting tacky and going off, gives you a better lift on the texture

You can mix the chopped strand in with the resin first, and talc after. What ever tickles ya fancy

Not saying it's the same. I didn't know of theirs. I kept making up my own filler (car body panel filler) and you have to do it in stages, by adding talc slowly. While it was runny I thought Ermm would make good paint. The chopped strand is a bonus

I think that what you had there was chopped strand matt with resin. Quite a lot of work involved in that process.

If you are going to use the chopped strand fibres, when the paint has cured, make sure there aren't any small spikes standing up from the 3mm fibres. If there are then just quickly go over the surface lightly with sandpaper

Is the ratio of resin to catalyst critical?

I tried doing small batches of 2 pack poly floor paint and often found I ended up with empty tins of hardner and loads of half full paint tins.

When you say chopped strand, are you saying these are short prices of what a David's isopn type matt would contain?

Cheers

Found a far better and cheaper pigment. You use much less to acquire a blacker black. And the added bonus, you don't need to stain the ply or mdf black first. This goes straight on to ply jet black.

http://m.ebay.com/itm/Mixol-Universal-Tints-Black-1-200ml-500ml-/271394668742?nav=SEARCH" rel="nofollow - http://m.ebay.com/itm/Mixol-Universal-Tints-Black-1-200ml-500ml-/271394668742?nav=SEARCH

you can buy this product in hackney, east London.

I forgot to add, you don't have to sand the cabs, just straight over the top.

Also, remember that 5 litres becomes 10 litres when you add the talc. Goes along way.

No primer. No sanding.

I'm sure I could sort out a camera for this. Need specialist breathing aparatus?

My wee little 12" subs need a coat of paint.

Where's the place in Hackney that does the pigment?

Posted By: tv00

Yes breathing apparatus would probably be recommended.

So you use polyester / epoxy resin?
I had a look at polyurethane paints , some come cheap too...

By the way I have tonnes of very expensive pigments for paints, these are in 1 l. bottles, so don't know if they dissolve in epoxy / polyester.

I'll go have a look, I have an entire shopping cart full of pigments.
I bought 2 pallets of paint from a guy closing his storage...

Dunno, I don't watch Countdown. But when that young bird from Countdown was on Top Gear(the tv show, not a drug dealer's), she had a really tight top on that showed off her ample bosom. Carol can not compete with her on that level. The bit where she's stood next to the leader board bending over will show you exactly what I mean. If you can find the Top Gear episode with her in it, she's in that one Wink

We are using a dark grey GRP resin for roofing atm and have painted 2 cabs.

It's easily available from roofing/builders yards, online etc, combined with 450g matting it makes a bomb proof speaker coating.  Cost is cheaper the more you buy ofc, as for actual cost i have no idea really as this was a left over from a job.

Other colours are available including black.

Tuffstuff on ebay sell tins of 5litre for about £42 which will do about 4 18" single bass cabs with 2 coats
however i've never used their stuff.

To resurrect this thread, has anyone here used this formula yet?  I have done a few boxes so far, and while the hardness & texture are good, I find it scuffs very easily.  After one outing the boxes look very second hand .. :(
Comment Mykey ?

I've done the same and found exactly the same! (I did the paint on someone elses cabinets for them after they asked to try it) It's rock hard and only needed one thin coat then another thick one to leave a really good finish. However it scuffs grey very quickly!

What's that Matting used for the GRP?
I'm considering doing some test soon with this cheap solutin, perhaps the homemade & this:

Which seems nice as it is Water Based (they also have the chemical stuff:-)

Please when you say matting, do you mean any Matt paint? Are there alternatives to all these chemical solutions? I tried I few saw dust from my cutting, mixing with a Matt paint, came with a good texture but not so rock hard. Would a bit of epoxy and Matt paint do a great job

No, he means fiberglass matting not mat Paint, it's all in the thread if you read it from the beguining.
