I get what your saying and could see it happening with promoters/sounds but honestly typing in capitals the whole time is horrible to read.
There really is no need for it and I don't get why people do it? |

Typing in CAPITALS is considered to be like shouting on the internet, no one likes being shouted at, its rude and shows a lack of respect for your peers.
Now on to the fact the same sounds get booked repeatedly by promoters. There are 2 things which need to happen for sounds outside of the premier league to get booked. First off they need to let people actually know they exist, its all good and well saying why do I get no gigs when noone outside of you local area has any idea what you are doing. The second thing is you need to prove yourself as being able to pull a crowd and entertain them which is a lot harder than a lot of sounds seem to think. Pretty much the only way to do this is to start you own event local to where you are and build a following. Just because you have built up a sound system does not suddenly entitle you to get booked for shows. I used to run sessions in the UK where there are lots of sound systems and when I was looking at booking sounds from around the UK I got a lot of people who were definitely not in the Premier League so to speak asking for more money to do a dance than those who certainly are in the Premier League. A promoter is not going to increase his costs for a sound which has a smaller following, its a stupid move if you actually want to keep a session running. I don't really want to call sounds names but it really struck me that there are a fair number of sounds who feel that they are being let down by promoters but don't want to actually do anything other than complain about it. I never got any outside help with my promotion, very rarely got booked outside of my own sessions and when I did often it was either a you play my dance, I play yours thing or there was so little money in it I made a loss taking the rig out to play. If you are having trouble getting booked by promoters its time to start organising and promoting your own sessions. If a sound cant be bothered to do that then why should a promoter be bothered to invest their time and money in you? |

Pretty much all promoters of events are in it for the cash, I'm pretty sure love peace and unity is a nice secondary bonus. They are always going to book the acts that guarantee them the most return unless they are working down at the more local level where it's more about the love of music.
Have you ever done any promoting? I've been involved with many people who run smaller local events and it isn't as easy as it looks. As soon as you move from local DJs to bringing in more expensive talent then unless you can guarantee a crowd you are going to loose £. Seen it happen many times, only takes one or two of those nights before a promoter jacks it in. The ones who make £ and have good initial budgets for events tend to book + work with known quantities such as Hospital DnB nights for example and I am sure it is the same in the roots world. Nothing stopping you having a crack if you like! Promotion is easier than it ever used to be in the world of social media if you have good contacts in the local scene. It's still very hard work though and pretty depressing if an event doesn't fill up after your hard work too. |

Adrian is right in a lot of what he says. Starting and maintaining your own local events is the only way. Some of these events may make enough money to buy you some new parts for your sound, many will not. The reggae world is very slow moving and slow to recognise talent outside of the 'big name' arena. There is blocking by certain sounds and promoters, but you just have to try and get on with it. Massive respect to Kilowatt, Qualitex and ProMotion54 who have tried in recent years to get some recognition for smaller and less obvious sound systems.
I totally understand the 'business head' approach to promoting events, but it doesn't always work and man, it gets boring to see the same names popping up at events all round the country. But those systems have worked hard to get where they are, whether I still want to see them perform or not. As for the capital letters thing, the reactions that came to ziontrain's post sum up why many folks don't bother with this forum these days. Instant flaming for no real reason whatsoever. Sure it is internet etiquette that capitals = shouting, but plenty of people do that on this site and they don't get abuse. Welcome to a new member, hope you find what you need :)

UOD, Subdub & others now bigger brands than the sounds that play these events (fact), sameway wid big festivals business. It nah matter who on the bill dem will still sell out anyways. People & promoter saying they mus book a certain sound to mek money in the dance jus nah wash nah more!

First off I apologise for using specific sound system names as I think its bad to single people out but what is needed is some real world examples.
There are plenty of "new" sounds which are getting breaks, its just that people aren't interested unless its their own sound. Look at University of Dub, I remember when Kibir La Amlak got their first set their, it was not so long ago. Also Instrument of Jah recently played there for the second time having put in the hard work doing stages at festivals and running their own sessions. Look at what the Dub Smugglers have done up in Manchester with the Iration crew, now they are just back from taking their rig over to Outlook which I believe has some promotional links with SubDub. 5 years ago they came down to play at my session and where genuine guys with a real love of reggae music. Now after a lot of work and some very successful events they are getting somewhere in the scene. Take United Nations of Dub (UNOD). This year they are doing their festival again and had a competition on facebook to select 6 new up and coming sounds to play at the festival during the day before the main sounds play in the evening. This is giving chances to be seen in a serious roots arena to Roots Collective Grenoble, Pressure Roots Hi-Fi, Sinai Sound System, Welders Hi-Fi, Operation Sound System & Dub Conductor. Also see that dance 2 posts up in Leicester, I think that's organised by someone related to the UNOD guys and thats promoting new up and coming sounds. How about Teachings in Dub in Bristol, giving Lionpulse, a sound thats only just had its first birthday, a chance to play with a veteran like Channel One. Thats not always the big 3, you get sounds like Massai Warrior, who are a relatively new sound being only 5 years old, Jah Lokko and Young Warrior all playing at that session. On top of these big well established sessions there are loads of smaller dances happening all over. I see Dub School in Bedford was always booking a variety of sounds, I see sessions in Norwich with a heaps of different sounds systems, the defend your town sessions in Birmingham, the best new roots entertainer dances from Birmingham as well, the Golden Palace in north London, sessions in Reading, Preston, Brighton, Bristol, Oxford, Southall and the list goes on and on There are plenty of sessions people can go to see sounds outside of the main 3 which I think we all know means Aba, Iration & Ch1. The thing is a lot of these sessions are run at a much more grass roots level than thousand capacity dances like Uni of Dub. The same things runs through is that the sounds that I see getting booked for sessions are the ones out their actually pushing their own thing. Releasing tunes, organising their own sessions and willing to travel and put in the hard graft to get the recognition they deserve and they have their promo down. I know about these sessions from the other side of the world because of technology and a lot of sounds dont want to move with the times, you need to list dances on the internet, word of mouth is not enough anymore and these are just sessions in the UK. There are loads of smaller sounds working all over the world, look at Europe, South America, Japan, India and even here in Australia we have sounds doing their thing. Remember, the race is not for the swift, it is for who can endure it. |

Good words from fat_brst!
Lots of exciting up and coming sounds, and it does seem to be those who are championing social media & making the effort to promote themselves!

Bang on mate Like you said, you can't expect to be booked simply just because you have a sound system. You need a reputation and people need to have heard you play before you can even be considered to be booked for anything. Just because "you" have a sound system, it doesn't mean it's any good, or you have the ability to select the right tunes and entertain people. The reason the main sounds get booked all the time, is because if you put them on a flyer, hopefully a good amount of people will turn up (and most importantly pay!) then walk out happy because they have been entertained. The point mentioned above is fairly important; paying people. The promoter needs to be certain that he can cover his costs. Not only the 2 (or 3) sound systems, but the venue, the promotion etc... This cannot be guaranteed from an "unknown" sound by being put on the lineup......Having a load of your mates turn up and want a guest list is not what the promoter wants. This is why a combination of social media promotion (to get your name out there) combined with putting on your own gigs, and travelling about the country as much as possible, is the best way in hoping to get booked amongst the "big" sounds. That and actually having a sound system that's genuinely decent enough to compete! Patient man ride donkey!

IMHO there does not seem to be enough exposure the new sound systems in London. Outside of it seem s very healthy at the moment. I also think the new sound system are trying to run before them can walk. I.E. spending their hard earned wonga on getting four mega stacks with racks bursting with light weight mega watt amps, home cooked dubs but they can't select. The one thing you can say about the usual suspects is that they know how to select Reggae. I've heard most of them play inna revival style, Studio One and Rub-A-Dub and sometimes they play better than when they play in a big 'Roots' arena! They also say that they enjoy themselves and give thanks that they can play tunes that they don't get to play in a Roots arena.
Let's see if we can find some small halls (not many left due to the iron lady) and just hear a sound with one stack of 4 subs and see how they perform. At the end of the day if they can't select wisely your dances will filled with just soundmen, ya uncle n ya granny - and even she may fling a bottle inna de selectas direction! To sum up - learn how fi walk first before yo star fi sprint! Oh... and let's bring back the clashes - but inna Rootsman style! Not so much 'my sound is better den your sound' or vulgarity just some good exclusive or non exclusive tunes. Just learn how to play some good Reggae music!
