The one thing you can say about the usual suspects is that they know how to select Reggae. I've heard most of them play inna revival style, Studio One and Rub-A-Dub and sometimes they play better than when they play in a big 'Roots' arena! They also say that they enjoy themselves and give thanks that they can play tunes that they don't get to play in a Roots arena.

Let's see if we can find some small halls (not many left due to the iron lady) and just hear a sound with one stack of 4 subs and see how they perform. At the end of the day if they can't select wisely your dances will filled with just soundmen, ya uncle n ya granny - and even she may fling a bottle inna de selectas direction!

To sum up - learn how fi walk first before yo star fi sprint! Oh... and let's bring back the clashes - but inna Rootsman style! Not so much 'my sound is better den your sound' or vulgarity just some good exclusive or non exclusive tunes. Just learn how to play some good Reggae music!
Bang on the mutha***** money Masai!!
Man them need to study how to select tunes, and also bring some charisma to the dance.
Hearing some sounds of late has been a snooze fest, moreso with their selection. It gets worst when one soundbwoy say "A special me a play right now till it done!!..." and then it all goes down hill. Too many selectors allow themselves to be led down that path, and the dance get killed.  Most really aren't ready to play with the big guns, they would get buried in a heartbeat!!
Some are getting it twisted thinking just being able to push SPL to rattle building while their brethren's and gal a holla and a bawl whilst patting them on the head and back is niceing up the dance!!
Done dat nonsense and entertain the people dem!!

This is giving chances to be seen in a serious roots arena to Roots Collective Grenoble, Pressure Roots Hi-Fi, Sinai Sound System, Welders Hi-Fi, Operation Sound System & Dub Conductor. Also see that dance 2 posts up in Leicester, I think that's organised by someone related to the UNOD guys and thats promoting new up and coming sounds.

Whens that. I might be able to go along and enjoy it for you ;)

Shoot, I thought it was in Grenoble. I was kind of wondering where they'd put a session like that here though.

back inna de dayz, some big tunes where made by being dubplates first. Nothing wrong with specials to be honest. If you're in a bashment dance then 30 secs of a tune is the norm. Not my cuppa rosie lee but under the cussing some of them are witty and clever. Roots one should be a bit more tasteful but I prefer to hear some raw dubplates. Good production, good musicianship, arrangements and everyting else tha makes a good tune. All in all I agree with you that we need some big tunes!! Tunes being the operative word.....

I get that completely Masai, just too many dubplates played that aren't up to scratch.  Playing a mix of released and unreleased gives the selector chance to show their knowledge of the music not just the connections they have paid for!  You get me?

I have to agree just because a tune is exclusive doesn't mean it is automatically good. Nuff "dubplate" I hear is only unreleased because no one would buy it if it was released.

True but it's down to the selecta to screen tunes and tell the producers of these dubplates - 'it nah ready yet'! As you said too many are just playing these tunes because they are exclusive but have no real substance to them. Better you just play some quality plastic and be done with.
