Reaper and Tracks Live are also free and aren't horrible to look at or use.

I don't find Audacity horrible to use, but I've never tried those alternatives to compare the experience.

+1 on audacity. Never let me down, even on a crappy laptop. Has loads of useful functions and seems to be a pretty efficiently written bit of code.

Free is amazing price to boot!
