It shouldnt matter too much, it all depends on the crew you have as to whether you can haul big heavy cabs on top of each other or have to be content with side by side, and also how high you want the mid tops to be

All you need to know is:
Sensitivity + Power Handling - Power Compression = Max Output

I've always prefered to stand them on their sides usually 4 high at a time so you get an 18 (for instance) on the floor and the rest follow up in a column. I have had this arrangement in some clubs, and nothing persuades me to do it differently.

Never tried this with 18" scoops but with 15" scoops and four per side we used to stand the bottom pair upside down with the drivers nearest the floor and then stack the other two on top with the drivers at the top of the cabinets--thus giving you the horn mouth coupling in the middle with all four mouths together in the middle of the stack and away from the floor---only problem is that you have an eight feet high stack of bass but it was never a problem for us as we used to stack the mids and hi horns on top of 4560s each side of the scoops----We found that stacking them this way gave us a lot more punch on bottom end and removed a lot of the resonant frequencies which always give problems with kick drum and floor tom mics for live work.

From my experience and advice talking to soundman in the Roots Sound biz, scoops on there sides are'nt really as effective as stood up. Mainly due to the fact they throw the bass out, utilising the ground, to fill bigger areas. Also advice was that if you have them on the sides, there better with drivers in the middle, so if you have 2+, you'd have the cones nxt to each other with the throw either side.

On there sides they dont carry as much weight, but this obviously depends on your crossovers etc. But i have noticed a difference when i've heard sounds stack them on there sides.

i may have to just hire four or so and try myself. i've seen all tyes of arragements 3 stood up one ontop but when asked y this was to get extra height for the mid tops. I have seen at a  outdoor gig wo either side of the stage on their sides only because agin height issues. if they had ground stacked then the mids would be about a foot above the stage because the stage was so high.
