Just seen a pic of some new Polar Bear Scoops. The scoop bit appears to be ONE slope, like a huge mini scoop. Always thought this was a cop out, but know Ligwa did it on some.
So: Does it make any difference? |

depends on what the design goal is / was. The first scoops were the jbl, then came the fane and eminence, all scoops since these three have just been mods or tweeks or combining elements from the three to create a new hybrid of the originals.
Mini scoops like the shortmans/ligwa ones follow the scoop principle but in reality are more like a hybrid rear folded transmition line, with no real scoop like exit horn. The curve or folded type on the rear (deflector) just really depends on how it was designed. the curved gives a smoother constant horn expansion. But also increases weight and build time to do. a two or 3 part straight curve is easier to build. For example the common 5 curve hd15 over the original 1 piece curve.

Thanks, but a single slope in a full size scoop? Must affect a bit if it's long?

Just sounds like you're not going to be making the most of the box volume in terms of horn length and expansion. Probably won't play as low, or impedance couple to the air as effectively as a proper exponential/hyperbolic expansion cab (or more like several of them together).
Everything's a compromise. |
