Some of my valve radios have electrolytics from the 50's still working, although one in my 1949 Bush TV12 did burst after a few minutes viewing

Here's one of my Turners with smaller caps in it, I'll just do the others like this.

You could always do what some of the vintage audio brigade do… carefully open up the old cap and remove the internals then put the new smaller cap inside the old caps carcase, They refer to it as re-stuffing.

Nice demo:

I recently rebuilt an old mosfet amp and replaced the main 50mm 15000uf 100v caps with some Philips/BC 63mm long life caps of the same value, they just about fitted and had to change the clamps and make a new bus bar etc. Got some genuine ones on eBay after looking for a very long time, totally confident they are genuine!
Big caps are not cheap by a long shot and it’s definitely best to buy from a reputable supplier lots of fakes out there.
Another way would be to make a capacitor bank from lots of smaller caps in parallel to make up the value required, supposedly this is works a lot better and saves space!

Okay, so finally ready to put a CPC order in. Its either:

12000 hours at 85 degrees for £9.41 each

or

2000 hors at 105 degrees for £2.32 each

Given that I need at least 6, the capacitance, tolerance, voltage and size are all the same and right now I have very little money is there any reason why is should spend the extra cash?

Cheers, Matt

That´s quite a price difference!

Vishay are a well known, reliable brand- and 6 x life.

Never heard of Multicomp, so who knows.

What amp was it, again?

RS have a better selection of those values. Multicomp is farnell's own budget brand and they source them from many places. I never use them, ever.

RS do Dubilier, Panasonic, Vishay (formerly Philips) and Kemet (formerly BHC Aerovox). And cheaper than Farnell, too.

Don't worry about the quoted hours lifetimes of those capacitors. They are a basis for calculation and give a lifetime (based on reaching a given leakage or ESR) when run continuously at the maximum rated temperature. The service life is inversely related to temperature and at normal operating temperatures it will be a large multiple of those figures.

In normal use, electrolytics will last for decades. The 105 degree types last a lot longer than 85 degree capacitors.

Finally got the caps, works out pretty neat with the pipe lagging.

Got some Kemet 105*c from RS, the other two amps have the caps hidden inside and have two rectifiers and four caps with one TX. My only problem is that they didn't come with bolts and they're M5. I mean.... I consider my stock of parts pretty comprehensive but M5... ffs Smile

Such an easy amp to work on, really solid build but only 4 bolts and the whole thing comes apart!
