I've had Norton for years but they're starting to **** me off. My subscription has expired but I notice when I click on renew it takes me to their website and a renewal costs $39.99. But if I simply do a search for antivirus programs, I can dowload the entire new 2009 Norton antivirus for ten bucks less. Why are these people trying to gouge existing customers and not new customers? It ****es me off. It's just enough for me to never use Norton again.

So what antivirus do you use and why?

Yeah, on Mac OS, simply because nobody uses itBig smile
Loads of Mac users now on XP.

Back on subject:
Nod 32 the best
Kaspersky, powerful but a pain sometimes, corrupt databass on install, why still????

Free: AVG has got heavy, Avast is cool. Anti-Vir seems OK but I'd go with Avast

Malwarebytes for spyware.
ComboFix for those tough moments.

If you are a Norton or McAfee or Panda or CA user, try the 30day trial of Nod32, you will love it.

Spyware doctor and Zone alarm full suites are heavy on resources just like Norton and McAfee.
Nortons LATEST offering seems lighter and quick to install, shame it doesn't catch much!

F Prot is also heavy.

I've heard good reports of Vipre........

Sophos is cool for corperates

Nod 32 will cost you, there are no OEM specials out there, they don't need to, it's very, very good.
It's everything, not everythink!

As a Software Engineer, would be great for me to have a perfectly secure OS installed, with no fear of virus or worm attacking while browsing net, downloading shareware utilities/music.

But in reality, all it takes is a person with the right tools/skills/manuals/motivation to craft a clever worm, stick it in a shareware binary or hack a website and script the download onto a page, and the Mac "virus proof" reputation is gone.

With OSX built on BSD, and the source code for BSD available for years, it wont be that long really.

And lots before that

The macintosh has never been virus proof - it is marketing mixed with a loose definition of a 'virus'. In reality, the most one faces if you update often is passing on malware to unlucky recipients and being subject to web/app specific stuff.

I also use Kapersky on the other side.
Away on extended leave.
