Cleared two rootkits and a shed load of trojans from a machine yesterday. AVG free sitting there like a deaf and dumb sound engineer

None! I stopped when Norton let MS blast into my system and killed all my account and everything else, So now I don't use anything and haven't done for the last 7 years or so and haven't had a problem since.
And yes my system is now backed up to an external drive (before anyone ask's) |

Symntec IS 2012 for small/single systems with Symantec EndPoint Protection for Networks, I won't work on any network that doesn't use Message Labs (yeah I am a reseller, and yeah I get commision, but TBH they are BOMB proof for email protection) but above all, don't use mission critical ( IE Cubase, 'Tools, CAD or other machines) to browse for crap and free stuff, I have a machine in my loft that just downloads torrents, nothing else, that's it's gig, I then copy stuff (mainly music) onto a network shar, Virus scan it and play it...
Being a bit of a sad git if I like something I then order it on amazon, but if the download is decent (320K MP3 or WMA lossless) I don't even open the CD, I just use the rip....
Whilst I have a nice HiFi I only really get the chance to listen in the car and 320K or WMA is fine, I have no issue with illegal downloads as I simply use them to try-to-see-if-i-wanna-buy, but they tend to be the domise of most systems....
PS I don't work for Norton or Symantec before anyone asks!!!

Avast! for me too - free and ticks along in the background and actually advises about potential threats before they get in, rather than Norton which lets stuff in and THEN alerts you if it hasn't hidden itself in your root directory first!
Also Avast auto updates without chugging your machine I've found. I'd go with AVG if I had to too. Also the fact that Symantecs source code for Norton 6 has been leaked by a hacking group recently doesn't make me put much faith back in using Norton...EVER! |

As I see it most users now use web mail, so no nice (POP/IMAP/Exchange) download scanning.
IMHO there is not one of todays products worthy of my money. I used to swear by NOD32, but as of late if it finds something (which it does) then it, "Cannot clean" or similar.
Kaspersky has got so damn fat it's like Norton 2006/7, it also tips over so damn easily, stupiid corrupt blacklist nonsense still going on after all these years.
Remembering I ONLY see problems, not nice well maintained stuff, so as of late I've told everybody to stop wasting their cash and stick Microsoft Security Essentials on.
I have got it side by side here with NOD32 on another PC. Time will tell, but so far I like it.

Hmmmmm.... Kaspersky has put on a bit of weight, but I can't see anything else giving me the same piece of mind for £25 (From Computer Fair). Have been putting KIS on Mom's PC since 2007, and she now automatically snaps it up from Tesco/Staples, when KIS reports < 30days left, and the £25'ish deal is on for 3x PCs. ![]() Don't even mention Norton, if it really worked, it would recognise it is worse than any Worm, and delete itself. ![]() Edited by levyte357 - 13 March 2012 at 6:24pm |

I think we differ in opinion here because you put Kasper on a healthy PC. I will say it is OK then with enough RAM, also cheap as you say. But on an older machine with, "History" ......
Had two customers this week saying they are fed up with its new found latency and bloat though.
My mention of email was due to many people just using BookFace etc now instead, or just Hotsnail and Yapoo and Google (we know who you are) mail. Not much POP/IMAP on me rounds, unless they are old, or its an office on Outlook.
Question: Whats worse than Norton?
Answer: McAffee
