Had the same issues with My Acer laptop when I first attempted a clean install of XP (it came with Vista) without a full re-formating. I had that 4 gig section of the Hdd with all the hidden backup for Vista just sitting there, and another portion of the hard drive apparently dissapeared. 

I then completely re-formatted the whole shebang and freed up all the lost space and had it running like a dream. The only issue I then experienced was that ATI dont do XP drivers for my GPU, so I had to re-format the computer again, Install an OEM copy of Vista Ultimate, then partition my HDD and install XP SP3 on the second partition. 

The system runs like a dream - 13 sec boot up in XP, 25 Sec in Vista - and neither system can see the others HDD.

Vista to XP Networking:
First you need -KB922120-v5-x86-ENU.exe
Next realise that Vista Basic or Premium (in other words HOME) will always require you to log in when connecting from the XP machine. This is only per session.
 Things to watch: Make sure the XP machines have a password on the user that you want to connect to the Vista box and likewise the Vista box. Turn on the guest account on XP machine (this as also the secret to XP home to XP pro networking). Make sure the XP machine users haven't  made their files private. Vista defaults to WORKGROUP not MSHOME.
 If you have ANYTHING Norton or McAffee remove the firewall part (good luck). If you really want a full securtity package use NOD32.
 Here's how to do it.
Password both XP and Vista users.
 Run network setup wizard on XP machines and choose WORKGROUP or whatever you want. Re-boot
 Go to My Network Places on the XP PC and find the shared Vista files. Upon opening you should be prompted for the Vista password.
 Go to Vista network and discovey bollox and let it hunt for the the Workgroup.
 When it finds your shared files on the other (XP) PC's try to open them, it should let you.. Vista Business doesn't do this everytime (i think)
 If you want XP and you cannot build your own PC go to Dell, dell.co.uk/offers hunt down a PC with Vista BUSINESS, then you will be able to choose XP downgrade which they will install for you, AND give you both XP and Vista media. I did four last week for £400 delivered with THREE years onsite. (each)
 Also a little, naughty tip. ANY Dell will allow you to install DELL branded XP without activation or serial no. The BIOS is tattooed and will allow. Has to be a Dell XP disk. Mine have SP3, IE7 and MP11 slipstreamed. Any updates will be cool.

PS, Vista is another Millenium  O/S. It will be gone in a year or so.

Ha ha nah, It's 2.2ghz Core 2 duo + 3gig of ram on XP SP3 with pretty much every non critical process dissabled. The only thing it has on that HDD partition is the OS, Traktor 3, external soundcard & midi drivers and a couple of GB's of music. 

13 secs is timed from the OS selection screen.

Heh. A fresh windows install is always faster also. Its as if it eats itself to live. I run ancient free hardware,like my current athlon64. I heard they made an EEE laptop boot in 6seconds with linux.

p.s. if anyone's having difficulty with installing windows - the last two times i've tried to setup a dual boot system windows has failed miserably and corrupted boot partitions etc. etc.

now i use ubuntu to wipe the drive, then install windows, then install ubuntu on the second partition.

so ubuntu have managed to create a free product which allows me to install windows better than the windows install CD. mmmmmm......

ive heard that microsoft have allready started work on the new os codenamed windows9 (or is it 7) and will be available sometime in 2010 so if you want to upgrade to vist its kinda pointless tbh i suggest all windows users upgrade to osx leopard and use boot camp to run xp :)

well lookin around its not rummor but solid fact but microsft are being cagey about realase dates but my bet is 2010 allthough some peeps seam to suggest it could be with as soon as the end of this year (2009) so what my opinion of vista... asta la vista baby

The funny thing is,Apple is LESS open because you have to use their hardware. Yes,it means it works properly though. Have you ever owned a windows machine that doesnt pause for 20seconds when you insert a DVD? Ive had several and they always do it lol.

Its windows7,you can download the torrent now of the beta. Had a few thousand seeders last time I looked :-)

The law of diminishing returns. Huge leaps since 1950s in computing from punch card to DVDs. Now we have a nice GUI and things work, what more can they do.

I dualboot with Xubuntu and xp. $711 for office 2007 license?

Ive installed ubuntu a few times,opensuse and Mandriva - from memory all worked well if XP was already existing. You can easily change the bootloader too - I had no idea how easy - just edit a text file lolol!LOL
