    Posted: 04 January 2011 at 10:51pm

Hello,

I purchased 2 Behringer B1800x Eurolive 18" subwoofer cabinets with blown speakers.

I would like to use these for a gig in 3 weeks and would like to add new and better speakers.  I started to purchase the Peavey speakers listed below, but after reading some of "The Loud Speaker Design Cookbook 4th edition" I came to the conclusion that I don't have enough knowledge to evaluate the speaker's suitability.

So I have 3 main questions:
===================
1) How would a Peavey 1808-8 CU BWX work in in this box (specs below)?

2) Any speaker recomendations for this box?  I am willing to re-tune ports and modify the insulation, but ideally I don't wish to rebuild the cabintes. The Peaveys are about $160 each and appear to be good value.  I don't want to spend too much more than this amount per speaker.
3) Is this cabinet realistically too small for a decent 18" sub woofer (volume info below)?

Volume of Enclosure:
==============
The raw internal volume is 151 liters.  It is 102.7 liters after subtracting for braces, ports, x-over, handles, pole mount, speaker, and insulation.

Raw internal volume: 151.7 L
Insulation:  34.5 L (apporx 2" thick dacron on the sides, top, back, and front)
Internal brace: 2.45 L
2 ports :  6.03 L total (6" OD x 6.5" long, 5.5" ID)
x-over: 0.344 L
2 handles: 1.46 L total
Pole Mount: 0.377 L
Speaker: 3.77 L
Note: There are some rounding errors converting from cubic inches to liters.

Secondary Questions:
==============
1) Does one subtract the volume of the insulation for the net volume as I have done here when speking of cabinet sizes?  Without subtracting the insulation, then the volume is approx 137.2 L net instead of approx 102.7 L.

2) Does anyone have the specs for the old 18" speakers that were in these?
    (Behringer Model 18P400A8, 400W power handling, 8 ohm, ser # 4 033653 060110)

3) A link to a forum posting on the merits of WinISD or other SW reccommendations?

Peavey 1808-8 CU BWX:

I don't know what a good driver would be for that box but, when working out the volume don't worry about the insulation/liner etc. In simple terms the air inside the box doesn't really take any notice of it.
With regards to the software question, just search the site as there's loads on here about WinISD, BassBoxPro, Horn Response amongst others.

EDIT: Forgot to say, welcome to the forum!

I reckon the Peaveys would be fine, they have around twice the Xmax of the original Berry drivers.

If you intend to give them a bit of spanking probably better if you use them with and external X-over, although the internal berry X-over looks well made I don't now if it would take the extra power of the Peavey. It is only 25% extra so it could be OK.

They would sound totally different to the woolly sound of the original drivers and I reckon it would be a very cost-effective upgrade.
Check the boxes before purchase though as this series of Berry enclosures would often fall apart of their own volition. Check all joints etc.

I know someone who has a pair of these on his mobile disco, he replaced the original drivers with Eminence sigma pro's when the originals let go, they sound loads better than the originals.
They know what is what but they don't know what is what they just strut what the .

my old pair were loaded with PD186's (have to fill the boltholes and drill new ones), bypass the xover, and an ideal 1000w rms per cabinet and my god they shift some air and sound really good!!

i later adjusted the tuning of the cabinet on the ports to take the tuning point down slightly, but dont have any of the details from that mod any more (good 6years back now!).

Sorry if its way over budget, but is something i can recommend from personal experience.
