I can't quite make out the labels on those output devices but is it that there are not 4 complimentary pairs?

I think the 'geezer' gets the brownie point.

All the NPN transistors in the channel had been taken out and replaced by PNP ones.

Let's not pre-judge the previous engineer, it's bad form. He/she might be a really nice person having a bad hair day. I'm sure the carpet fitter thinks the same about my DIY kitchen cushion-flooring! Mind you, that only cost £60, roll end.

Earlier I removed a repair link which unfortunately had linked the wrong parts together, sending DC (+/- 120V on this model) into the output leg of a potted PWM module. But that's one for in the morning. I haven't thrown in the towel just yet.
