Had one years ago with the input cable strands wrapped round the tinsle lead-in wires on a Goodmans driver, and then insulated with Sellotape! Owner obviously didnt own a soldering iron.
Be seeing you.

Why would you do that to a 218?!
Gaffa tape is like the force in Star Wars - there's a dark side and a light side and it holds the universe together

Quote I would have thought that the BK module was an improvement to the thing!

Not really, those italian bass cabs have 16R drivers in them, I think the amp in virgin form would do maybe just over a hundred watts, particularly as they downsized the bus caps..the original ones being too big to fit in the enclosure.
The little board glued or stuck with sticky pads to the back of the mackie pre-amp is the low voltage supply.
I demurred on the repair, politely but firmly.

Somebody has tried to repair it before you and made a mess of putting it back together.
The soldering looks a mess, for example Q521E probably isn't making contact.

Hard to tell from the picture, but is temp comp transistor U500 buried under a blob of solder, or is that just the heat conductiong compound?

U500, the ODEP temp sensing IC is ok, just the way it is.

Quite a raft of bizarre faults on this pair of 5000's are coming to light slowly.
For example I've just had to fit a new snubber capacitor to the fan speed control triac...because it had been replaced by an NTC inrush thermistor.
