A nice Friday afternoon mini quiz. Behringer DCX2496, arrived from another dealer. 'blows fuses'. Too late for lunch but a pic of my evening meal for the winner.

The grey rubber/silicon looking "sleeve" stuffed in the black/red wires to left of PSU section.

Is that supposed to isolate a Voltage regulator or transistor or T0-220 packed component with a live metal tab, and it isn't?

Or is it supposed to sleeve the DC output wires (those same red and black wires) against the metal "houseing" of the PSU, and it isn't?

+1

That sleeve is definitely not in the right place! Someone obviously forgot to replace it over one of the clipped-on devices in the PSU section.

What's for dinner??

LOL

Matt got there first. The switching transistor (well..topswitch) has a live tab and has been clipped direct to the earthed heatsink, the silicone sleeve wandering about inside. Someone had been 'recapping' the power supply. A little knowledge etc...

Can't show you my dinner. It was a tin of Lidl macaroni cheese, which tastes similar to Ambrosia Creamed Rice, but saltier.

After poking my hands into my brothers exposed dcx whilst slightly inebriated one evening I can definitely confirm that there are exposed live parts on the PSU side! It sobered me up a bit! Tongue

All SMPS's will have high voltages floating around - even after being turned off! The filter caps might hold several hundred volts for quite a while. Not a good idea to "poke about" in there!

Just like valve amps. You soon learn no poking until you've made sure that all the filter caps are fully discharged!  Shocked

A quick friday morning quizlette, not too difficult this but this QSC PLX came with the fault report 'no power'. Pic of my lunch for the winner, which hopefully my father will bring before midday.
