Hi, looking for a bit of advice, if anybody wouldn't mind throwing their opinion in. Looking at building up a rig for Indoor and Outdoor use to play a variety of bass music, but versatile enough to play most genres fairly comfortably. I was thinking;
-2/3x Mt122 -4x Hd15/Es15 -4x Startec sbh (pd1850 loaded) I've heard good things about the super bass horns, and after doing a bit of reading, the majority seem to like them. I already own 4x 18" scoops, and so with my next set of subs wanted to head in a bit of a different direction to the standard scoop design and like the idea of having some folded horns in the arsenal, plus i fancy something a bit different. -Firstly, does anybody think this is a fairly good idea for a setup ? -secondly, would the sbh's be a good idea and would pd1850s be compatible, or should i think about going the route of hog scoops or other cab designs ? -And finally, what sort of amp's would people recommend for these cabs ? Any feedback and advice would be greatly appreciated Thanks, P

The SBH's are some of the most brutal bins i have ever heard... more so than hogs. The ones i heard were V18 1000 loaded and could seriously bruise internal organs!!!
I know that the 1850 does work but the guys who owned the ones that i heard had swapped from 1850's to the V18's and they thought they were better off with the V18's. I would advise that if you want a more balanced sound an 18" kick section may be a little better, the ES18 etc as the SBH's are so bloody loud. Amp choice - BIG, POWERFUL & FULL OF COHORNEZ!! Inf 8 or simular!!

Hi,
SBH look like great cabs. Also have a look at the MTH-4654 by Marc O on hornplans.free.fr They are slightly small and certainly easier to build than the SBH but seem to match them in power and depth. See the sim below comparing the 2. http://hornplans.free.fr/8MTH-4654%20vs%208SBH.gif |

i havent heard the startec horns, but we run es18's and hogs loaded with 1851's and were very impressed with them, also the es18's are good enough to run by themselves in stacks of 4 or more, which is useful for smaller work

Hello, You should ask that guy who made 12 SBH / pd1851 loaded : I've heard them several time, and YES it's a very physical bass / sub. Caution : if you load your enclosure with the 1851, the original plan (for RCF 18N401) will not be ok because the 1851 is larger/bigger. PM if you want his email (he's not register here). |

Just reading this old thread and saw this comment... has anyone heard the difference between a SBH and this. A tapped horn obviously has its pros and cons but I’m wandering why people havent chosen this over the SBH..

The mth is not going to go as low, or as loud. EDIT - Didn't even look at the graph, now you've got me thinking.

Wondering why you say this, as for approx a year on FB, I kept seeing people putting up SBH for sale ads. Also wondering, has anyone actually heard 1850/1851/V18 loaded Hogs or SBH, outperform ASS S118 or SteveB/Wattco Scoop, 40-80hz, playing Dub/Roots Reggae?

SBH is a common choice for people who don't really know what they're doing - promise of strong 30hz in stacks which few others can offer, huge SPL, brutal aesthetic - it looks loud and menacing, 'like Funktion one only bigger!!'
Same reason why everyone wants a system that looks like a line array, and now as we see on another thread today, even buying drivers with ridiculous oversize magnets. If you make choices with your eyes rather than your brain then the risk of mistake is huge. I'm not saying it's a bad design at all btw just that it's commonly built without thinking things through.

People think I'm totally biased towards Scoops, but my Fav bass cab of all time is probably the Martin WSX. Folded horn, usable in pairs inside, downto 45hz. Load with non RCF driver, better than new cab.. Problem is, in smallish venue, all the Sub is outside..
