Its been years since Windows Update has worked for me, I just don't know whats wrong with my Mac...

You've haven't removed the 3rd world OS and loaded Win7x64 is what wrong with your Mac...
 
Back OT, both are fine, try ipconfig /flushDNS
 
support.microsoft.com resolves to 157.56.121.21 on my system and opens.

Edit: just skim read the article, they go on about people downloading software then run into problems right? I guess you can protect from most things, but not the stupidity of the user.
