Of course they'll be outclassed by a modern pro sub assuming you pay pro prices which means 200 minimum (and in that price range the only real improvement will be max SPL which isn't relevant to you due to your amp power limitations).
They will play 50, won't play much 30, but neither will anything affordable. You can do better than these but not for the same price new. If I were you I would just scour eBay listings for used pro audio / dj equipment with search term "15 inch sub" or "15 inch bass". Usually a few options come up but maybe not local to you. That post didn't sound very convincing anyway. A fraction of the size is not true. They're not that big, and anyway size works in your favour for low frequency performance. I don't see why these wouldn't have a decent amount of 45Hz and some useable 40Hz especially for home listening.

One cabinet per channel, normal stereo mode. 100W/channel is more than enough for my living room! Most (decent) older speakers will be a lot more more efficient, ie better SPL, than the more modern ones - with a possible sacrifice in bandwidth, ie not going so low, but they should do 40Hz/50Hz without any problem. Most of these cheap subs you see advertised around will only do maybe 60dB 1w@1m below 80Hz. Useless really. |
