Ah now you’re gonna confuse them! Yes, it’s important to also understand the difference between sound intensity, sound power and sound pressure. Those also are not exactly same as the expressions of the LEVELS of those things. http://www.sengpielaudio.com/calculator-soundpower.htm https://ccrma.stanford.edu/courses/150-2001/SPL.html https://youtu.be/ZWDT3umjI2I |

Back in the day, the term "throw" was used as a subjective non-technical term describing the effect of directivity. As has been noted it had no scientific definition, but it was a convenient descriptive term in widepread use. So for example if you had a narrow dispersion horn or a directive array covering the back of a room, it would be described as "long throw". Similarly the wide dispersion stuff covering the front rows would be "short throw". A giant stack of bass bins 10m high and 2m wide (yes, that's what we used to do) was definitely "long throw", by virtue of its vertical directivity, as evidenced by walking 100m away and listening... To complicate things further, some driver manufacturers used "long throw" to mean "high x-max" , i.e . a bass driver with more allowable cone travel than was usual for such products. Given that there are now plenty of better descriptions of what's really happening, it's well past it's use-by date... |
