Time for an upgrade...

Okay, my PR12 cabs definitely are NOT for bass reflex, plus I need a bit more bass in my setup, and I've kinda got a hold on how to build my own cabinets, so I'm thinking about making a carpeted pair of 15" subs, but I'm not exactly positive on how to build it.  Should I make a horn loaded one like some of EV's subwoofers or should I just go with the front-facing standard box?  These are going to be hooked up to a bridge-mono EP2500 power amp (2400w @ 4 ohms bridge mono) and are mainly going to be for hip hop, electro, freestyle & some rock.  Also, what would be the best material?  I made a (cheaply made) sealed box for a JVC 12" car sub from 1/2" plywood, but I see a lot of cabs built out of MDF.  Would that be better for boxes that I want to last for a while, or stick with plywood?  Thanks.

MDF is a bit more dense than most plywood is and as such its heavier. however since it is a manmade board its not the most resiliant to weather and tends to fracture at the corners easier. its not a bad choice by anymeans as it is about 35% less expensive than most decent quality plywood. ply on the other hand is lighter and more resistant to weather and chiping which is why most cabinets are made from ply but again its a bit more expensive. Ok so honestly if your rig is fairly small i would definately recomend reflex cabinets there lighter and easier to move around. Its also easier to tune your system in to that sound that you are looking for with reflex than it is with horns. you trade off a small amount of total SPL but for most people its worth it. I would build dual 15" cabinets duals tend to hit lower frequencies than single cabinets do. unless you can find some special 4ohm or 16ohm 15" subs though if you build 2 cabinets your going to end up with an 8ohm impedance. as you will need to run 4 subs off that amp or your going to be pushing WAY to much power to each woofer. ive not see to many 15's rated for 1000+w and even those i wouldnt push that hard.
