I must admit on decent scoops with a good preamp the XLS 5000 has always been my budget guilty pleasureEmbarrassed

A quick search on linkedin shows his day job is technical manager at dutch company Eriks Power Transmissions in Kingswinford. Eriks used to sub-out repairs to me from their former electronics repair centre in Liverpool for some years.

Yeah I was thinking that. Possible theory <g> .... apparently he lives in Cosford - which is a very RAF place. Maybe he trained/qualified in the RAF ... and because of that he gets work for them in some form ... MOD have sizeable budgets - even these days.

Aye, but unfortunately I'm not too well served here for electronic component shops, so have to resort to the 'bay, or pay silly surcharges for Digikey, Farnell, Mouser, etc.

Good thing is that making a claim for faulty components there is usually simple & quick. You just got to spread your bets - or stick to one or 2 reliable suppliers. I do have a couple bookmarked, so usually use them, but always test, test, test. Only way to avoid tears.

You're right there Earplug. I try not to buy any transistors off Ebay purely for that reason.

Edit, as has been shown by Em pro with some of his 'can-opener' photos in the past, what's inside a TO3 has very little relation to what's stamped on the outside.

Yup. The only way to do it. So many fakes floating around these days. Especially switching MOSFETs. Can't trust anything.  Cry
