I don't think this could be used as evidence of a 'police state'. You can clearly see how bright even that small laser was, how bright would a serious laser be? Imagine if the cops were chasing someone who'd just nicked your car, but lost him cause some little knob jockey was out for a laugh? It's the same as pointing a 1000000 candlepower spotlight in a coppers face while he is trying to drive. Think he'll ignore that?

I think if you're dumb enough to point lasers at aircraft, police helicopters or cars then expect to be punished. You can't say oh it was just a laugh, this guy had a relatively small laser that easily lit the cockpit like a disco strobe. I'm sure in a dark cockpit(which your eyes have adjusted to) the flash of a decent laser COULD be enough to temporarily blind the pilot. Maybe not enough for any sort of crash or anything but still dangerous enough.

I have no sympathy for things like this. Stupid acts by stupid people :)

One new law in my area that i farking love, is that if caught doing burnouts/skids(pick your local slang) in a car 3 times, and they crush your car while you watch and cry like a little bitch-big rims, sound system and all HAHAHAHAHA!

oh, I was just talking about the general ability to burn things at close range in my first post :)

True, but we were talking about actual damage to the eye...

True, but I would imagine that a 300mw laser would be annoying if you were trying to pilot a helicopter at night. With the divergence and distance then sure the final intensity would be pretty low - but the article was from the media so there will be a certain amount of pushing the story. (not sensationalism, but in that direction)

Although the quote "When it is right in your eyes, you simply can't see anything else. We are 1,200ft (365m) up, but the beam is strong and sharp." does suggest either a very high powered laser or exaggeration perhaps? Although, Im no specialist on lasers.. =]

edit: oops

Quote Just to make this clear - these arent the little 'laserpens' they're using, more like high powered lasers off http://www.wickedlasers.com/ that are able to burn stuff

They are able to burn stuff at a few feet, not a few hundred feet, we're still only talking a few hundred milliwatts here.  My <100mW 532nm 'burns stuff' but doesn't shoot pilots eyes out at half a mile through glass.....

And as i said earlier, beam divergence will be big at that range, so energy hitting the iris very small.

Also, these are hand held so won't be staying on target for more than a few milliseconds (you imagine trying to hold a 500yd long stick with a 1m wide end on a point a few mm wide)

There is a very good post on photonlexicon where they discuss the reality of laser pointer hits on pilots, with input from laserists who are also pilots.  Interesting comments about wickedlasers on the thread too......

yeah, they can take the signiture of the specific light, take whatever they may find on suspects and then use it as evidence in court. I highly doubt anyone will get imprisoned without a fair few slaps on the wrist and repeat offending. I can see why it annoys them, not good!

While they can analyse the frequency / wavelength of the beam with their thing they would then need to get the suspects laser and test the frequency of that as well. There is no 'register' of laser owners in the uk. Precise matching of different laser diodes is possible though, each one almost has a 'fingerprint' of the different wavelengths of light it gives out..

they were saying on the radio program that they "catch the beam", analyse the lasers individual frequency and therefore trace the owner / pin it on a person... is this possible, really?

To be fair, lots of other countries have much tougher penalty systems in place for this sort of thing already.

However, at those sorts of ranges, most laser pointers are not powerful enough, or have a tight enough divergence to do proper damage, esp after passing through cockpit glass.  the risk is very much from distraction than anything else

Yer caught the end of that report yesterday, what exactly where they picking up on - just the laser? a prison sentance sounds a bit harsh for shining a small laser
