Yes. Years ago I got pretty much obsessed with the classic Tannoy Golds, after hearing a couple at a friend's studio in London. He A/B'ed them against a couple of NS10's (admittedly crap, albeit "standard" in studios) & the difference was obviously chalk v. very nice (French) cheese. I eventually got myself a pair of 12" Tannoys, that served me well for years. Then, I bought a few Tannoy T12's that someone had on offer - & out of curiosity did some A/B testing against the Golds. To my surprise (to me) the T's sounded better, even though worth a lot less. The Tannoy Gold market is a bit stupid. Like a lot of the hifi stuff. It is definitely about brands & marketing BS, not reality. |

I used to have some Tannoys (HPD 15) in the 70's. They were good in their day but the top end always sounded a bit ragged. It's due to the inherent distortion in the compression drivers - they are nowhere near as clean as dome tweeters and dome mids. At one time I owned a pair of ATC SCM200's (installed in a studio control room) and after that, I really noticed how bad most other speakers sounded. I now use a pair of SCM20's, which I will never get rid of, but am getting too old to really appreciate them. |
