Plenty of threads detailing horrible sound of HD15s over 160hz, wondering if anyone has overcome this through mods, tuning, using specific drivers?
Have certain application, where Kick section cannot be bigger than HD15, Must be 15" driver, Driver must be forward firing. With parametric smoothing and right driver, can HD15 do 200hz, "nicely" ? Sim thread suggests so, but using as kick means simming in 4PI, for certain applications may only be 2x HD15s per stack. Edited by levyte357- - 20 December 2012 at 10:28am |

I've crossed them over at 180hz to Porn Horn and did really think they sounded good. Nothing wrong with them. Those ones were loaded with some P.Audio drivers that had slightly lighter cone than the typical drivers used in HD15. It was festival gig with loads of DJ based Rap performances and several bands, no visiting engineer neither us thought there was anything wrong with lower mid or upper bass range. It really seemed to work well
However, I am also extremely satisfied with 1850 horns with V18-1000s crossed over at 160hz, even 180hz didn't bother me, with pretty much any program material. This took quite a lot of research with delay times and EQs. So my word regarding HD15 should also be taken with a pinch of salt.. |

Don't use a PD driver. Fane XB would sound quite nice up to say 180.

in hd15 you need light drivers
Ideal woofer I've found was P-audio SN-15B OLD version look for something with close parameters. |

Thanks chaps, keep suggestions coming.
Search of old threads revealed many consider PD154 to hit hard in HD15, but not much warmth, however with PD 156 not as much grunt, but warmer flatter sound. Comments on this? Believe I've found a driver that gives required response, but need this nailed, before build starts. Edited by levyte357- - 20 December 2012 at 7:59pm |

I found the 154 hard and aggressive, the 156 i thought a bit slow, it went deeper but not a fast punchy driver more softer and smoother, didnt think it was right for the HD myself. I think it depends what kinda sound you are after, i like the kappa 15 in the HD15 its tight and fast but i dunno if you would like it for dub / roots / reggae music.. it wont go as loud as the 154/156.

Drivers with a lower EBP.
Just tap the cone from underneath with the tip of your finger while it's on the bench. A soft cone will give a warm thud, the sound is almost as if it's in a reflex chamber. This would be ideal for what you need Lev, low to medium EBP. 154 is a hard stiff cone EBP of 180, great if you want to take someones head off. Lowish QTS and lowish BL. I like the Celestion, EBP of 136 http://celestion.com/product/69/ntr153018e/ tiss a beauty. Not cheap but Bee might be able to help you out with that. Weighs about as much as the cardboard box it comes in. I would also suggest ......... Edited by mykey- - 21 December 2012 at 2:01pm |
