i am slowly building an X1 for use in a dj setup, and i am looking ahead into plans for what midbass cabinets will work well when used with this subwoofer.  The consensus seems to be "hd15!" but i really dont want a horn, and i REAlly dont liek the way the hd15 looks.  I designed a cabinet that pulls an spl of 103db/w/m flat from 70 hz to 440 hz.  though id need a ratio of 3 of my design to 1 X1, id still be getting way better frequency response for midbass. Going that high has a ripple effect.  midtops crossed over at 440 hz dont have troubles with bass messing up the midrange drivers, so in theory i could use 6 inch drivers and some horns to build tiny midtops, all around for a really small but really loud system.  does anyone know of a reflex design i could construct to pair with the x1 and get the same overall system spl response using fewer or smaller cabinets?  perhaps i need some enlightenment on the difference between horn and reflex enclosures.

Stick some charcoal foam over the front of the HD15, it looks quite different and far less threatening this way.

Or a compact ported dual 15(v shaped front behind grill to reduce size) with a highish tuning frequency for powerhandling and sensitivity-easily capable of x1 output.

Or like above, put a grille on a hd15!

A 6" mid will struggle to keep up, maybe dual 8" with the horn mounted in between? Although this will still really only have the same output as a good 12/15?

Why not just build a dual 12/15 cab and horn? If you want to keep it small it'll be better that a bunch of different cabs and amps to run them!

It's possible that Fane 18 inch reflex design might be as good as the X1. as it goes down to 35hz.

ahh yes... the dual 15" with v-shaped front is exactly the cabinet i envisioned.   i have a question about this design though, because this is something i have no clue how to calculate---  my current design has a V shaped front, but the two ports are going to be situated at the back of the V toward the rear of the box.  im assuming my V will have a slight horn effect, which brings me to my question... will putting ports at the back of the two horn regions effect phase and and stuff liek that?  I suppose a better visual is that it is an M when viewed with the top of the box removed, with the bottom of teh M facing out and the top being the inside of the cabinet.  if i put two ports in the rear crevices, will that be better than one port in the very middle up front?  if this makes no sense then i will make a drawing and scan it tonight, but if someone has advice then id love to hear it, im totaly stumped.

now im thinking... has anyone ever tried porting a speaker like the 1850 horn on the inside at the beggining of the horn?  what exactly would that do?

Search this forum.  The topic of porting into the horn has come up a few times.
