What makes them unsuitable for live music ? Excuse me for being a tad ignorant but I thought a sub is a sub and coupled with some dedicated kick bins and horn loaded mid tops would be suitable for all music types?

hahaha, absolute bollocks! They are 100% PERFECT for live music if used correctly!!!
X1's are subbass cabinets, and as such should be coupled within a suitable system to work as such. Sure, they are less than ideal for live music if used without a kick section, but they will also sound rubbish used for playback without a kick section!! wrong tool for the job if you make sweeping statements comparing to a oneway bass reflex design....
