April 8th 2014 is the date to remember. There are already warnings of masses of exploit attacks since MS will no longer be issuing security patches/fixes to avoid/repair such problems. It's a pity really when there are literally tens of millions of people still using XP who have no need for a more 'advanced' operating system and the learning curve required with its installation. Here are a couple of useful links regarding the latest @Tuesday Patch': http://pcsupport.about.com/b/2013/12/10/patch-tuesday.htm Edited by jazomir - 15 December 2013 at 7:20pm |

TBH, unless you have every port forwarded on your router to your internal IP and run no AV software, I don't see the issue, I know of 100s of boxes that never recive any updates and none have burst into flames or stolen the family car. XP is 10 years old, I real terms is 32bit (xp-64 is not that common and driver support, is at best random) so if anyone is using it at the min it is probably on older hardware and if it does what you want now it will do that in 4 years time, I have machines that I have never updated and they work fine... Personally I will be sticking with W7-x64 for some time, W8 is dead in the water and XP can't deliver the power I need. But please, no one spend cash just because MS won't be dicking with your OS every 5mins anymore!!! |

pretty much, run a decent AV/intrusion prevention package, I use Norton Internet Security for most single machines, keep that up to date, don't download dodgy stuff and you will be fine, I had a NT 4 server running until last year, I don't know if NT ever updated, I know it didn't even have the lastest service pack on it, worked fine, replaced with a dual Xeon machine that runs about 10 x faster and generates about a third the heat!!!!! Thinking back, that dual P3 Xeon box must have cost a few quid in electricity over the 15 years it was in my loft!!! |

I use virgin as an ISP but I have no idea what their security is like, but I am assuming it is fine as it is not in their interests to have the support impact of a crap package...

Back to Ian's original statement, it's from "Patch Tuesday"...
which Micro$oft should rename "Patch Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. During which time your PC will be almost unusable, even though we won't put anything on your screen to warn you of what's happening. And we'll see just how many times we can make you restart your PC without you writing a snotty email to the Customer Services team". Admittedly, "Patch Tuesday" is bit 'catchier'! |

I just got rid of both AVG & AdAware and moved to AVAST. It seems a lot less intrusive and resource hungry than the packages it replaces but I am still having major problems with my HDD light on almost permanently, CPU utilisation still going up & down like a yoyo with no applications running and my BT stuff still doesn't work. My machine is usable - just - but I am determined to find out the root cause of the problem (my money is still on the latest MS Patch Tuesday release, but it's difficult to pin it down conclusively).
