Hello guys, After some adjustments of the first prototype I am proud to present you the X-tro hornloaded top cabinet: http://www.iven.nl/bouwproces/bouwprocesxtroII.htm The next few week the second generation prototypes will be build. The 9 th of april there is a party for 500 people. We will use 1x X-tro a side together with 3x Punisher a side. Amps will be QSC PL and Crest. X-tro drivers are 2x 18Sound 15ND930, 1x B&C 8PE21 and B&C DE-500 on Beyma TD245 horn. Best regards, Walt |

Very nice Be interesting to see how they sound. Whats the theory behind the curved horn paths, or is it just to allow a smaller external dimension? |

The 'curved' horn path makes it possible to mount a 15" driver behind the mid section therfore saving space. External dimensions are small: H31.5" x W20" x D30" The second 15" gives the X-tro 3dB of extra power compared to normal designs which only use one 12" or 15" as mid/low unit. The first test showed the X-tro is capable of some serious high SPL levels. Best regards, Walt

Looks interresting. I take it design is for only one unit a side. What components did you guys use?

Hello Timber, We use 18Sound 15ND930, B&C 8cx21 and B&C DE-500 on a Beyma horn. X-tro should work with one a side (perhaps some small infill cabs) Best regards, Walt |

Ahhh, too busy viewing the speaker pR0n to realize Walt actually posted the components....
Anyways, seems like an idea with a bit of potential. Three/four punishers underneath might make for some alarm and be fairly compact. |

At our submeeting we build a mono stack of 4x Punisher driven by Crest CA12 and QSC PL4.0 this was a very brutal system! A system consisting of 3x punisher/1x X-tro a side would be even better I suppose But 2x Punisher/1x X-tro also sounded very nice. In that case 1500W for each punisher is recommened. Hi Contour -- where are good crossover points for X-tro to subs?
whats nominal sensitivity of midbass corrected for 1W? what does wedge throat section on 15ND930 accomplsh? (sorry for poor English - am still American) looks like nice party coming up Best wishes, Freddy |

Hello Freddy, According to the AJ simulations the nominal 15" section efficiency for 1W input is about 100dB at one meter. This is the free-air response! You might want to add some dB's for halfspace efficiency :-) Response should be about +/- 2dB from 80hz to 400hz. RTA of the first prototype showed a flat response. We would like to cross to subs at about 90-100hz. We will have to try what sounds best. Punisher has a rising response so it might be wise to create a little gap to compense for this for example subs to 90hz and X-tro from 100hz. The wedge section gives a better kickbass than the old 15" section from the first prototype. Best regards, Walt

HI Walt
re: wedge throat seiction - assume kickbass effect is something which won't show up in response curve. old Karlson box rear shelf choke someimes exerts siimilar effect with only a slight shift on Z-curve. don't yet see your 15" X-tro driver in US but must be coming. X-tro is tiny (wheres the piezos????) 21lw1400 is available - probably too much mass @300g (+cost) for a fun Karlson (?) - would look cool. are you going to video-record the next shootout? are there dynamic tests such as recording a speaker then analyzing peak dynamic/spectrum with wav editor? (or view on fast RTA) Best, Freddy Edited by freddyi |
