Yes - that´s what I love most - VAT on the shipping and handling charge. WTF is that??  Angry Angry Angry

I recently bought a 10" driver from the States (Celestion NTR10 2520E).  TOTAL cost was £85.00 on the Global Shipping programme, which included shipping and import duty, and  of course the purchase price.

The driver alone in the UK is £139.00.

£82 tax on a driver that was less than £85

Surely that can't be right? What product attracts tax at in excess of 100%?(assuming they'd not taxing the shipping)

Well, 82 quid duty and some import company's hefty markup on top. Hell, even Parcelforce charge £8.
Shipping shit from the states isn't expensive if the seller is savvy, but too many vendors opt for using 'specialist' companies to effectively fill out a customs import form.   In the UK you owe VAT (20%) on anything over £18 and duty (whatever they feel like%) on anything over £120,  so it adds up if the declared value is high...

Even if the value is low (under the £18 limit, so literally the cost of the stamp and nothing else) some companies take the piss:  Koss sell replacement earpads cheaply, $5 a set (including sales tax) and nominal US domestic postage.  They fit my '69 esp9 & '73 pro4aa's, so bless their cotton socks for keeping equipment that old useable...

...but...

Try ordering from outside the USA or Canada and they hand over delivery to a third party, who whack on outrageous FedEx delivery, duty and clearance fees, like I was shipping Bengal tigers or something, not an envelope with some foam and pvc.

Those $4.57 (I'm getting them tax free remember, no US sales tax and under the £18 VAT limit) earpads now cost over £23, by the cheapest economy delivery.  Bloodsuckers.

My point was that driver / mixer / car bonnet / golf clubs / whatever the tax should be 20% or so?

Ive done it a couple of times, never cost the value of the goods again. Somebody has either filled in the paperwork wrong or charged you a £60 odd fee for the privilege.  Both of which suck.

Frustrating getting stung like that.  Feels wrong.
