hey im quite new to speaker building but have my heart set on a pair of mt 122's coupled with (yes i know a very very VERY inadequate and wimpy) single g sub. (with plans to build more adequate ones in the future). i think i will power the g sub with a crown xti 2000 which will give me 400w headroom. and my questions are:
-will i need to run an active crossover? or will i get away with passive (i am on quite a tight budget and the system will not, certainly not yet, be used for anything big, more house parties etc) -will i be able to run the mt 122's of a single xti 4000 and build them to be 4ohm which would give me 500w headroom on each speaker OR would i need to run the hf driver and LF drivers of different apms through an active crossover? any help would be highly appreciated :)

use an active crossover and 2 amps, 1 for mids 1 for highs, use a speaker management system like a berry dcx 2496

+1 For sub, you could buy brand new Crown XLS5000 for £575, with 3 year warranty http://www.thomann.de/gb/crown_xls_5000.htm And 2x Matrix STR1500 for about £350 used, (I prefer QSC, but Matrix is cheaper for you )That would sort you out, and sound better/have more headroom than XTIs, and also cost less. Know few people bridging XLS5000 into 4 ohm, and very happy. Should be fine for 2x18s per channel, for "normal" people... ![]() |

your all such speakers guru's, i swear in my like 3 days in this forum i have increased my knowledge base about 5 million fold. however i am based in australia so i dont think it would be worth buying heavy equipment from europe, also i can get xti cheap through a friend, so people dont rate them? could i run the hf with an xti 1000, which would have 125w headroom at 8ohm, an xti 2000 for the mids, which would have 200w headroom at 4ohm, and then the thing i said earlier for the sub all through that berry thingo? i dont think id really go with any other thing unless he can get them cheap too. thanks for all ur help. oh p.s, it seems that every time i post something my budget gets blown by about another 500 dollars (250 pounds (ish))

re: what you said before, it WOULD be better to get some decent amps shipped over- the xti's punch just isnt there on bass (imo) whereas matrix's perform well (and you can get them at reasonable prices 2nd hand)
you dont need a dcx2496 really, it would be ideal, but any kind of crossover will do (behringer cx3400 for example, is a 3 way crossover) so provides signals for one amp for the gsub, one for the mids, one for highs thats gotta be a fuckin loud 'house party' system though.. |
