Was wondering what the pros/cons are of removing the dogleg?
Does it open up more driver options?

less cone control ,slight loss in spl ,imho opinion work's way way better , I have a pair with it removed and 1851,1850 and tmax 1000 all sounded way way better , for fane and 186 etc i would leave in to help with the control of the cone

This is why I say now, better just to build Mykey 18" scaled up Fane Scoop, or just build Eminence 18" Scoop.
If you have older drivers.

Thanks for the reply all.
Scoops are already built so building new ones isn't an option for me at the moment. Wanted to see if there are some more modern, off the shelf drivers that would work without dogleg? Mid priced and looking for musicality over SPL

Removing Dog leg, means substantially increasing chamber, and hugely increasing throat. As Paulus has already said, this means substantial loss of cone control, and reduction of SPL. Tells you, just removal of dogleg is not enough, to keep cab useful for most drivers. |

So are there other mods mods that can be done if dogleg removal isn't enough?
Only asking these questions as from what I've read lots of people are saying the cab sounds better without the dogleg. But these comments were made years ago so those drivers aren't avaliable anymore new so seeking current options.

Does that mean they're not public knowledge? Can you point me in the right direction please?

Not sure was hoping for advice from people who have done the mod. Something that is currently available to make life easier. Was using 186 before and was thinking of getting fane xbs but then started reading about these mods.

I have direct experience with these drivers in unmodified super scoops. Using a JTS enforcer preamp and JTS UA6 amp, 2 or 3 drivers on each channel.
Fane xb... Nice warm musical sound, goes fairly deep but not serious spl. Pd 186, very similar to the xb, slightly more spl, nice deep notes. Pd 1850, not a good driver for this cab, doesn't hit the deep notes not musical at all. 50hz and above reasonable spl. Pd 1851, very nice. Moves alot of air, nice deep notes and fairly high spl. Celestian ftr18 hdx. Feeling slightly fragile, around the xb-pd mark, not serious spl but sounds nice. The caveat with the 1851 is how the cabs are stacked. Normally we had 3 standing upright on each stack. Easy to control via the pre, could drop some nice weight. But we also stacked 4 together on their sides 2 high, scoops in the middle. Much harder to control the bass, felt 'floppy' and very difficult to get higher bass notes. Transient response seemed to suffer. It felt as if we needed tighter cones when used like this. As I say, unmodified supers. I also used the original fane 'wardrobe' scoops with 1850. That was a good combination, fairly brutal but not the most musical. The fane scaled up could be a good choice. |
