Is there a modern equivalent of these or are they really that expensive?

Thanks

The modern equivalent of the Solar 250 is the.....

Solar 250!

iirc one of the cheaper manufacturers (Source, Acme or something) used to do a projector that took the 6" wheels for about £80 but it wouldn't take dual effects or cassettes.

Can be had for about £100 on ebay and hold their value well.  Accessories are expensive tho.  I've got 9 now and a range of effects but its been costly along the way.

edit: try a Google for oil projector, you'll get a few hits for Showtec, Soundlabm, etc units that might do the job if you actually want an oil effect.  For anything else I'd just buy a Solar, you can always sell it on.

they are brilliant lighting effects, watching the actual gobo/colour wheels spinning amazes me!!!

There were the Tutor/Tutor2's which used to take the same accessories (well with the corners cut off) and lots of variations using kodak lenses and other bits and bobs.  Still quite a popular pastime for a lot of lighting folks....   Coloursound, Bubblevision still going, making custom effects and things and a small army on ebay buyinjg up all stuff that comes up there.

The Rank-aldis Tutor was far superior to the Optikinetics Solar 250..better made, better optics, much stronger (with a lovely cast ally case)..also had less light spill..all the solar 250's i had gave more light from the top and bottom vents than came out the projection lens when used with a dynagraph wheel set.
I have a Source one now (with the oil wheel),and its great,no light spill....only £80 new..god knows why 20 year old solar 250's sell for over £150 on ebay.

Check out this link and his collection of old Tutor projectors and effects.

Edit, just found his splodascope page, good stuff!

Funky Parrot was one of the ebay faithful I was referring to in my previous post - had a few odds and sods off him over the years

Yep,i think the other guy on Ebay who keeps the prices high is "optifanetics"...im not saying its wrong, just seems by time you have bought a 20 year old solar 250,and a rotator, and wheel and prism etc,its pushing over the £200 mark, just seems a lot for what they are nowdays.

The best projector i had was a modified Kodak carrosel,it had been adapted to take a 3inch opti cassette rotator, the bulb was the same as a Solar 250 (A1/223 i think),but it was sooo bright, really good optics in it.
Be seeing you.

Is that user optifanatics?  If so its prob www.optifanatics.com

They're actually really nice guys, saw them at Plasa couple of years ago and had a chat.  Given that a new Solar with rotator and lense is £400, i don't think £200 is too bad, and they are pretty bullet proof.  So yes, i see your point about the price seeming high, but I bet some of my other lights won't be in a similar condition in 20 years time.
