    Posted: 04 January 2012 at 9:25pm

Finally got round to testing the system at new years.

2 x dual loaded 6" mid range drivers 1" comp tops  fane sov range)  Xover at 18khz to 160hz
2 x dual loaded 12" sub drivers (BMS 12"630s) Xover at 160hz to 30hz

The system was run off 2 Crown amps a 602xl for the tops and a xls5000 fo the bass cabs
Crossed over with a DB mark Processor 2x6

the room we were in was small about 7 x 7 metres so the system need a bit of EQing to lose colouration from the raised wooden floor and the reflection from the low ceiling. The top cabs did,nt have the low end crossover to the bass cabs as i would have hoped because of them being in free air on top of the poles. but they didn't need to. the bass bins where so accurate up to 200hz they easily covered the lack of low hz on the tops

Tony Wilkes gave me the plans for the bins and i have to say they where incredible once we had the system EQed and our small glitch sorted. We turned it up the first time a bit to get a idea what we where dealing with. it was a bit disappointing to be honest it sounded ok, but not as loud as we hoped at this level. We did a bit of tweaking and found out that the Mackie mixing desk that my mates had for years (ever since i met him). Was being a bit optimistic with what it was reading on the output we double checked it on the dbmark and it wasn't putting out the right input (about -6db). that adjusted and using 2 new channel strips we turn the system back up and started the workout and my god it was good. we started with some cds bjork, katebush, pixies then onto some pealjam tweaking a tiny bit here and there to get the best compromise for all types of music. then some electro, dance, dub step and glitch hop.

We wher'nt disappointed the bass bins where amazing when fed some serious power. they had great attack without sounding harsh, and the bass extension was so tight and low!
the top cabs where tight allso. i had been worried that they wouldn't keep up with bins output. But they did and without sounding harsh or over run. the whole system sound fantastic very please!
the system could be turned up to nearly full power and you could still hear all the definition and could really feel the bass in your chest! so much bass in fact the ceiling cracked.

After it had been run in for 3 days it just got better and better.

Thanks to Tony and all the help i have gotten off this site over the years it has been invauable

Here's some photos for you who have just struggled though all that.

Recording the mixes.

Most Mackie Desks have a switch on the back that switches from -10 to +4db I think. I know that my 2 do. Always catch me out too lol. +4db is the right setting.

be careful with the xls range on any sub duty. A wet fart has got better damping factor and they will rinse drivers if pushed slightly too hard.

No worries with these bass bins they need a lot of power. i was recommended 2000watts a bin. and we never feed a clipping signal into our amps.

Cheers for the advice though.

Edd,

Are those bins the ones you were cutting the timber for when I collected that HH amp from you in the summer? - if so they've turned out proper minty, you must be really chuffed.
