wow, i've not seen that page in years! i do remember pictures of this
cabinet in use in a barbecue environment. it looks wicked, but where do
you get servo motors like that on the cheap? also, the belt/pully
arrangement must be very well engineered.

if i wasn't already finishing 8 midhorns, building 16 basshorns, 2
bandpass subs, 2 4-way horn loaded mid tops, some hf unit housings
and some monitors i'd seriously think about it.

damn, i need wood. got the drivers, just need the wood.

james.

A local sound company has a set of eight ServoDrive BassTech 7s. They require fairly regular work on the belts, idlers, and the PRs as well.

Newer 15s have the same displacement as the PRs do on the BT7, and with XBL^2 technology are very efficient too. A single Atlas 15 will have as much displacement as the two Lab 12 drivers.

I would build a scaled up version of the the B-DEAP design for 15" drivers. The B-DEAP design looks much simpler inside than the Lab-12.

I've been curious for a while why PA manufacturers haven't produced drivers like some of the sub drivers i've come across whilst browsing diyaudio forum.  some of them have silly xmax and huge magnets.  Are they simply not as durable for PA applications?

And rather inefficient. Although the Labs are like this too. Maybe the ridiculous x-max and heavy cones don't like the massive excursion for extended periods of time, unlike movies where it is only for short periods? Don't forget that most commercial cabs are looking at 40-120hz bass and need punch and speed, not 15hz in room extension!

Every sub would basically need to be a folded horn.

hey DJK - how are new Atlas 15 built? - or is it discontinued - seems like they ditched XBL^2 licence.

how about a diy Geddes lever and good conventional driver?  can this be accomplished  with two regular PR's coupled with alltread? - gotta be easier experiment than diy servodrive !

The Geddes Lever was very different when it came out, but I don't see a place for it other than as a novelty.

I have no idea as to the new Atlas 15, but MTX is building dual gap drivers with no mention of XBL^2.

Just have to wait and see.
