Topic: The wait is over.....1851's have arrivedPosted: 23 July 2010 at 2:47am |

After having numerous discussions and hearing various rumors over the past year or so i finally took delivery of my brand new pair of 1851's at around 11 o'clock on wednesday night, courtesy of pauliepaul and his late night delivery service. I was informed that i am officially the first customer in the world to receive a pair. Was dying to check them out so took a kitchen knife straight to the box and uncovered a speaker built like a tank with a magnet worthy of taking centre stage in a display cabinet in my living room.
Managed to load them up yesterday evening in a pair of mini scoops to do a little sound check so thought i'd put up this post for people who have been wondering what to expect. I kinda knew what to expect myself as i'd already had the pleasure of listening to these drivers last year in MY MINI SCOOPS at the pd factory A/B'd with a mk2 1850, which is what made me place my order straight away for 4 after about 5 -10 mins of listening.
Loaded up the cd player with my favourite speaker test cd (dubz from the higher regionz) fired them up (crossed at 80hz, with flat eq and no parametric) and the memory's of what i heard last year came flooding back with a vengance. Warm deep bass filling out the workshop and a pair of speakers with hardly any cone movement and begging for more. Even though it was getting late in the evening i could'nt resist so it was only right that i turned up the amp a little more, added some processing
(this is the scoop forum) as you do when you start to get carried away and turned up the mixer. This resulted in a mist of dust being blown in the air in front of the bins, the place was shaking like never before. The 1851's still have that disgusting pressure the mk2 was known for only thing now is it seems worse, as the dust was falling from the ceiling constantly. The pressure was agitating the air and threatening to turn my workshop inside out. But the best thing for me is that it's got a more smoother tone than the mk2 which is what i did'nt like about the mk2 in particular and it's what caught my ear straight away with the 1851. The 1851 clearly has more excursion than the mk2 also, but unlike some drivers i've seen bouncing all over the place with not much output it's controlled very well by that huge motor and a new designed egde. At one point i stood in front of the bins and could feel the bass through the concrete floor beneath my feet. I really could have pushed them even harder as they were no where near ready to give up but had to consider my neighbours, but it was astonishing to see even at that level how much bass just 2 of these drivers could produce. All in all would say all previous 1850 disciples are not gonna be dissapointed and i would not be the slightest bit surprised if this driver holds the crown for another 10 years until they revamp it again. I can see alot of upgrades being made in the next few months once people have heard these with there own ears, the haters will also be around and comment as this driver is more ballistic and better sounding than the last but everyone is entitled to there opinion, and this is my personal opinion of how the driver sounded to me. And before anyone tries to accuse me of tryin to boost sales of the 1851 i would also say people should not buy a speaker or bin just because theres hype around it, once you've heard it and you like it just buy whatever your ear likes and not base your purchase on what you've read on an internet forum, but i personally think most will like what they hear comin out from this driver, pm pauliepaul for a demo if you don't believe me and judge for yourself.
Gotta give a BIG BIG shout out to pauliepaul who i've been talking to about the 1851's for the last year and got me the drivers before anyone else. Could not believe the drivers were actually sitting on my kitchen table after all the talk. He's the only reason i managed to get a listen to the driver last year, so big up yourself bredrin and get ready for some serious orders.
Before we get carried away though, i think it's only right everyone gives some serious props and i give a shout out to the man who spent the last year or so doing the research and design to produce the 1851, had the pleasure of meeting him last year (you know who you are, hope your reading mate). As the mk2 1850 was quite possibly the most used driver of the last 10-15 years in scoops etc i'm sure this was no easy task and the pressure was on for him to improve a driver which was already hugely successful. All i can say is keep up the good work mate, and your driver definetly has the ULTIMATE seal of approval
. The new king of the 18" drivers is here to stay.![]() P.S. my 1851's are 4 ohm drivers and were tested one driver either side of a ca18
Yes thats correct 1800 watts per driver if anyone wondered. Here's some pictures for you bass heads.
Sorry for the long post gents, T.R.U.

Excellent post MR U.

Very clever of you, to use 4 ohm drivers. I know of 4-5 amps, not that expensive, not that heavy, that would be perfect for the job, of 1x 4 ohm driver per channel. Edited by levyte357 - 23 July 2010 at 10:04am |

I'm trying to convince my friends in Manchester to let PauliePaul stick his demo ones in their Hogs very soon, will do a similar trip report and maybe even some freq response graphs if I can get a good enough space and mic setup going.

Yes, he shouldn't really use them. They should be off to the Tate Gallery, for viewing only. |

1851 thicker magnet silver plate (near the frame), littler cooling hole....maybe a littler coil diameter?

1851 has 4x cams instead of 2x, 4 valves for each of the 8 cylinders, forged pistons, lightened and balanced crankshaft ?

Thicker magnet plate for better cooling and they look like they can take fatter guage wires.

They missed a trick by not painting some racing stripes on the cone, it'd go 3dB louder.
