I'm just pulling the battery out of an XTA that I've recently aquired as its certianly started to leak. The unit powers up with a battery warning but seems fine. I haven't yet had a chance to pass audio though. I've noticed there is a bit of the acid that has fallen on to the tracks. What is the right thing to clean it off with?

Okay, the battery is out and I've cleaned it up so far with some dry cotton buds. that tracks and the laquer seem okay but I've noticed that the legs of IC4 right next to where the battery is have started turning a bit green.
As mentioned, other than having tested it passing aduio it does still work so hopefully theres a remedy to stop it going bad... Whats the cleaning process? IPA and a toothbrush? Cheers, Matt.

Just a thought, but after that thorough clean, a coating of clear nail polish would do the trick.

You could use alcohol to clean circuits, isopropyl alcohol or any pure alcohol on cotton sticks. Or rince it water, just put it under a running hot water tap and blow off by air compressor. Seems counter-intuitive but is really the best! Some print restoring companies use a regular (clothes) washing machine to rince prints  If any traces of the acid are left behind, they will continue to react. For the oxydised IC legs, maybe desolder it and clean the legs with a glassfiber pen. Give the legs a nice thin coat of new solder and the nail polish could be applied indeed, nice trick with common goods.

white vinegar & lemon juice to neutralise the potassium hydroxide that leaks out of batteries that stay flat for too long..

Yes, KOH (or similar) indeed! Because it's not battery acid if it's strongly alkaline. I recall there's a type of battery doin' the rounds lately that they even explicitly call alkaline batteries!
If you've spotted any damage, take a clear, in-focus, well-lit picture and post it here. There's probably others besides me that are also into electronics repair, so there's plenty of opportunity. |
