Thumbs Up gents!

Looking at the specs of the 4538 & 4544,

the 4538 shows a higher crossover point of 1.9kHz & a higher frequency response compared to the 4544's crossover of 1.3kHz & not as high freq response!

Although the 4538's is not as powerful, does this mean it should sound a bit finer/sharper than the 4544's ?

Has anyone compared these 2?

Cheers.

i have the 4544's on some new celestion horns recommended by tony, but i've not fired them up to play around with x over points yet.

Just the X-over point. The 4550's needs a greater Xmax to allow use at a lower cut-off so gets a larger magnet assembly to keep the sensitivity up (more voice coil out of the gap).

On the MT's I would use 4550's and cross them as high as possible, around 1K would be perfect.

Tony

Is there a 1" 60x40 horn that is prefered for the 4550 comp?

My MT121:  1.4" bms 4554 on an 18sound xt1464 horn - xover 1.3k with - pd123er
Sounds great up to 16k but lacking a bit above. may need to play around with the eq a bit.

any suggestions from other users of this combo would be much appreciated.

To be honest the 4554 is a bit of a runt. Compare its FR with the 1"4550. Unless anyone already has the horns I would always recommend the 4550.

@ Highlift you just need to EQ them to give you the tizz. Smile

@Tony, will H1-9040 allow 4538/4554/4550 to give 13K+ sparkle without much eq?

If Xover is >=8K ?

Ray,

Unless you intend to use them later on for other projects 4544/4550 totally wasted. Use either 4538 or 4524 as I pm'ed you. If you mainly want the HF and are happy crossing <5K then no need to spend more than what the 4524 costs.

The 4550 would be perfectly OK on its own in an MT212 if crossed at 1K - 48db/oct, would need EQ at HF to add sparkle but that's all.

Tony
