Greetings Massive,

Me and my brethren are planning to build a sound here in the states. We have been long fans of the UK dub scene. What had us scratching our head, when looking into building a sound system, was that not many sounds use PD-2450. Maybe Errol from King Earthquake. Is there a reason why everyone chooses the PD-1850s instead? We really wanted to start off with two PD-2450s. Would love to know what the massive think about that move.

FYI: There are a lot of sounds out here who play reggae and dub and they sound nowhere as heavy in the bass as the UK sounds do.

I looked at going 24" in the UK, but I very quickly realised is was doomed! In the UK many venues are function rooms in social clubs and / or above pubs and were never designed to get large scales systems into them. I use a few venues and all have rubbish access, single doors and long thin corridors with turns. I went 15" in the end, a total change from my original plans based on:

1. Truck / van pack (wanted to get speakers to fit 4x8 footprint of standard van)
2. Access through single doors
3. Weight, need to be moved by 2 people, 1 if trolley usable
4. I felt that PD driver was very old and felt modern drivers would have benefits (maybe wrong here)

I suspect that unless you only play certain venues with good access and have big vans then most people on here in the UK will have similar requirements.

I suspect that's why they not that popular,

Would think the fundamental question is, are there any cab designs, that really fire with the PD2450?

Next, how many dub sounds will buy amps big enough to properly power these drivers,

Next, how many dub sounds in UK, play in venues, where the mains supply is sufficient, and there are no SPL limiters in the building?

PD1850 in right cabs, were the most potent combination for many years.

Now, there are other more potent 18" driver/Bass cab combinations.

Some dub sounds are even using dual 21" custom BPH designs.

So PD2450, is nothing special in the UK, really. Just big and Heavy.

From a practical stand point America/Canada/Australia are just big countries full stop this includes house's, venues, vehicles etc etc so that size is no problem. As mentioned above the 24 prob will produce certain notes but there are scoops and hybrid designs out now that use 21's that produce low notes with good spl. Milton in Australia has a 65''driver that's he's rolling out with all things are possible but not advantageous in UK. If the sounds in the US sound no where near as heavy as UK it might be worth exploring why which might result in not having to use PD24 There is a thing called function over a form or vice a versa which way do you want to go?

As we both know, plenty of sounds smashing up venues in UK, with 18"/21" drivers.

Many now even going after Neo drivers..

So more reason to not buy driver, as heavy as Moonbase Alpha. LOL

Think how big the box would be, and how much it would weigh

Then trying to pack that into the back of a 3.5T van....

What about musicality and response? I may well be wrong, but a bigger cone equals more flex, more weight to move, etc. Ok, modern amps have the power to move it but very bass still has transients and reggae bass is still played on a bass guitar occasionally.  Yes I appreciate that the upper bass section deals with this, but surely through the frequency range, there's going to be mismatch between upper and lower. In my experience, 18s and to some extent 21s are optimum.
24s, more infra sonic, ie cinema sub and explosion reproduction.

If you wanted to make a home cinema room and load eight of them into the walls infinite baffle style, I don't doubt they would blow your eyeballs right out of your head with about half a watt. A great tool for that job.
But for putting in a box and using for PA...in a world of 700mm doors...nah.

Sounds used to have crew, many from boxing clubs. Youth not generally interested in old time R&C, so sound man haf fi lift box alone.
