Seems like a couple of fans on this forum. Mind you they sound superb run actively and one can even get rid of the period 1-2kHz (but very, very slight) dip. When teamed up with subs there is really very little that perform that well in especially larger size rooms (and for mike.e they have superb reflective behaviour in the HF, about on par with tractrix horns in a study by Holland that I should really have scanned sometime)

Martin : would like to see it!

Also Ive been emailed an article about stahls synthesis of loudspeaker parameters through electrical means, changing driver parameters, using constant current source, and lower distortion-I think through the last item rather than anything else.[audiopro.com]

I havent investigated concentrics but the KEF white papers seem to show a nice resposne in the time domain for their co ax.

Uhm, KEF's UniQ drivers are not bad in all fairness, but not quite he real thing when compared to Tannoys. The little 3/4" dome isn't up to the task of reproducing what I'd expect ito dynamics. They are however considdered superior to Seas's co-axes by many but a dome tweeter isn't nearly as good at driving a waveguide as a comperssion driver.

I'm a big fan of 'fullrange' drivers! I use visaton b200's in Visaton's own 'Solo 100' design. Response ranges in room down to 30hz and on axis up to 15k(and above -10db at 20k) with only small ripples at least to 10k(+-2db or so)

Nothing beats the sheer coherence of the sound and the imaging. Sure there is a little crispness missing and pounding bass(active sub makes up for it if required) but they sound 100 times better than my vifa loaded MTM's on surround duties or the Vifa 3way transmission lines upstairs(although the TL's are genuine 20hz monsters!)

i haven't got round to setting up my hi-fi for years now, which is kind of
disappointing and a bit of a waste as i have a pair of quad esl 57s. i
would like to build a small rig that could be used in the living room
comfortably, and i have enough passively cooled amps to run it without
fan noise. got some other things to finish first though...

one of the quads has a torn dust cover which farts at any respectable
volume (a simple repair and i know from reputation that they can go
pretty loud) and i'm not really sure what amp i should use to drive them
as i don't have any valve gear. this is more than a puritanical point as the
electrostatics present a pretty wierd impedance loading if i remember
correctly. one of the 1970s bipolar bruisers that have now been retired
from active duty could be used, but maybe something smaller would be
safer.

i want to use them in some kind of bedroom studio with an active sub,
they are rather special. listening to live jazz recordings on them is
actually spooky, the imaging on them is so wide that you can really lose
yourself. rumour has it they were voted greatest hi-fi product of all time
in some survey in 2000, which i find believable.

In my workshop/study/spare room atm the hi-fi is a pair of mismatched, ex-install Turbo TXD520's and one of my 15" subs under the desk!  My 'proper' hi-fi which I bought during my gap year is a pair of B&W DM602s2's. Nothing amazing but the combination of kevlar bass-mid and aluminium tweeter gives a nice crisp sound and no shortage of volume.
