I'm not...
![]() Mind you, I've been following these forums for a couple years now and have yet to successfully design anything... Lately I just have not had much time as I'm now an Electronics Engineering Student at RCC in Toronto, and seeing as how I've been out of school for 16yrs It's been rough finding time for anything but the kids and homework. When I finally some designs together and prototyped I've already got a company name picked out and am hoping that they look distinct enough to not be considered copies. The big tough point right now seems to be finding suppliers ( 18mm Birch ply @ $150ish CDN per sheet sucks ), and getting better with Hornresp.

Forgive me for the comment but if you planing to build professional audio speakers for profit, a market research would be beneficial to find out the competitors on the current market. How long they been on the market and how they making money? Yorkville company http://www.yorkville.com near to your location, building boxes from a cost effective plywood then texture painting or covers with carpet. Not all bins have been built from Baltic Birch plywood ! To target a cost effective market, then I'd say get general construction pine plywood for 27 CAD at any Home Depot (or 22 CAD on the larger order) use it for internal walls of the box. Same ply can be used if box will be covered with carpet or epoxy texture paint. For greater quality and esthetics Baltic Birch plywood can be used only for visible outside walls of the box. |

He probably isn't joking on cost because I'm in the Southern US and it is $$ here also.
atisimi - that pine is usually complete crap. Though I did get some 1/2 x 4 for some picture frames and it was superb. I realized as I was putting it together that it came from New Zealand! Understand my state (alabama) is covered in pine... thank you US congress for protecting us... Everything is a copy! So dont worry about it and do your own thing. |

Way I described in my previous post above, I personally have built 15 years ago many professional speaker cabinets and far as I know they are still in good shape and in use in City Of Toronto and for touring at Southern Ontario Province in Canada. I have never paid more than 50 CAD for sheet of birch. The pine plywood what they selling here for general construction use is just fine. To prove a cost, I'm unable to get pricing trough Internet from Home Depot, price is available only at local store but Canadian owned Rona posting they cost on the item, see it here: http://www.rona.ca/shop/~plywood-birch-plywood-canwel-347282_!plywood_shop Edited by atisimi - 09 January 2011 at 2:49pm |

Starting to seem like I may have accidentally hijacked this thread, if so.... Sorry for that
... Is it maybe possible for a mod to pull the ply pricing posts out and put them into a new separate thread? To clarify, $150ish CDN if i remember right is a rough guess with taxes in, on a 5x10 (foot) multi laminate 18mm sheet, I haven't actually checked the price in about a year from the ply supplier I found in Scarborough (Toronto), with a very similar price at my local Home Hardware. MDF on the other hand can be had at my local Home depot for less than $40CDN on a 4x8 sheet of i think 11/16 (inch). I have rolled around the idea of fiberglassing the visible areas as I have seen it on here and with a good painting on inside panels could reduce moisture problems when using MDF, however weight becomes a huge issue. Edit... spelling Edited by infamousj - 09 January 2011 at 4:36pm |

5 X 10 is custom size. ( Some people special order to home made 5 X 9 table tennis). Standard measure for the sheet in North America is 4 X 8. For cost saving, when possible use a standard stuff that is mass produced. Edited by atisimi - 09 January 2011 at 8:07pm |
