I´m planning to build 2 hogscoops loaded with PD 1850´s. Just got the first of the two 1850´s today so it´s still a lot of work to be done before the hogscoops are ready. Still. I need to do some planning and I need to decide what amps to go for since I guess that´s where I´ll spend my money.. And I also want to have the amps ready for when the hogscoops are.
So I´ve been looking at three different amps to run the hogscoops. 1. Matrix XT5000G 2. Crown Macrotech MA-5000i 3. Void Infinite 7 All amps meet the required specs on paper (which basically is 1000-1250w/channel in 8 ohm) but I have no idea how they perform in real life. I like the idea of Matrix and Macrotech since they don´t weigh as much as the Void amps. And I really like the looks of the Macrotech but someone told me that Void is the "sh*t" and would really deliver some heavy bass? The music that I play is 80´s reggae (mostly 85-89 stuff) and it´s all vinyl (if that matters?). I don´t really have a budget but I still want the most bass for the buck. If two of the suggested amps will deliver the same punch and power but one will do it for less money I´ll go for the less expensive one. So please, give me some advice about amps! And please, feel free to recomend any another amp you think think is better then the ones I´m thinking about. If you want to hear the music that´s going to be played on this system you can check soundcloud.com/garabediansound //Tuff |

Get a Macrotech 5000 or Inf8.
Or "proven" lightweight. |

What, in your opinion, makes Macrotech or Infiniti 7 (or as suggested 8) better than Matrix? From what I´ve read not all people are that fond of Macrotech but I´m not really sure why. Macrotech 5000 is about 2000 usd on ebay. Do you have any idea about the price for a Inf 7 or 8? //Tuff |

Many, many times have seen Macrotech 5000/Inf8V2 absolutely belt 2x 1850s per channel, without much issue. Have also seen QSC PL380, K10, FFA10K, LabG and many other "quality" lightweights do the same thing, without issue or thermalling. Can't say that for all lightweights. ![]() Inf8V2 will probably be cheapest in UK. |

These days, there are plenty of right choices and ways of doing things. But I would take £1200 used Inf8V2 over £800 MA-5000 anyday of the week. Most of us "mostly" play in places with only household 240V 13A sockets, and in these venues, Inf8V2 will outplay the Crown, not only due to more output power, but mostly due to efficiency of 87% vs much older Crowns 65%. Advantage of MA-5000, Good design, holds price well, very solid performance if fed decent mains current, plenty of docs/support info. Disadvantages, poor sound quality/high distortion compared to other sub amps, low efficiency compared to modern amps, costly to repair, poor performance if mains supply not very stiff or sagging.
