Looking to build a compact 12 inch bass/sub for house parties, is the BMS 12 still the king of compact reflex builds?

Not looking for massive spl, just something solid at 40ish hz and more importantly - a box I can tuck away into a corner.

Thanks!

This should fit your bill. It's a good sounding driver. Maybe not as good as BMS, but still good.

Thanks, forgot about that plan.

I don’t have a massive amount of amp power on hand (500w @4ohm) so won’t really do the big boy drivers justice, in small boxes they need a lot of power…

Still tempted by the Tony Wilkes Q12 with BMS, it’s so compact Clap

If you can get the search function to work, the thread discussing the origins of the Q12 here on the forum. If I remember correctly the suggestion for the BMS driver was a 40 ltr cabinet tuned to 42Hz.

The above plans for the Ciare cabinet are 40 ltr tuned to 37Hz.

Both the Ciare and BMS drivers will perform similarly in either of the cabinets. I would suggest 40 ltrs at 40Hz, simply because the tuning is not that critical, and the measured tuning will be in the 38 – 42Hz range which is good enough.

I have a friend who has used both these drivers in such a cabinet. He says that in in use they are difficult to distinguish, and suggests going with whichever drive unit is either cheaper or more readily available. As a lighter option, the faital Pro 12RS1066 will also work in the same design.

Think I'd be leaving a house party early, if the sub was provided by a single 12" reflex..

I'm a big fan of the Q12s. Make for a great house party rig.

Pretty sure the q12 called for a big boost at tuning frequency, if you've got limited amp power available that may be an issue. I built a small reflex 12 with a beyma 12lx60v2 in it which is great for small house parties and the like. The size ended up being based on what ply I had leftover, I think it's around 45l internal. Just had a play on hornresp and ended up tuned to 40hz and it sounds sweet.

For me the, absolute minimum single cabinet solution for a house party, would be something similar to a B&C 1x18, loaded with PD186 (Mk1), or better.

This cab works with so many 18" drivers unmodified, but guess would be even better with full 200L internal chamber.

Yeah, i guess we all different views on what constitutes a house party - my needs are more for background music at a decent level that can be turned up if we fancy a dance.

Speakers are always indoors, so with some corner loading a 12 inch bass will definitely do the job.

I've done a house party with a single 15" reflex and bridged 1k amp behind it. It was a Klipsch KI-115, which used something made by Eminence. Probably similar to a Kappa Pro 15LF, but it had a bigger magnet. It was rated at 400w RMS and it had all the bass the house needed!

Also birds..Wink

Some of us "older" Reggae dudes, had pair of Realistic Mach IIs, ADC Soundshaper Eq's, and Technic Class A Amps in our bedrooms as teenagers, rattling the letterbox on the Front door, from our back bedrooms.

So the thought of a house party, with sub provided by 1x12" cab, is simply unthinkable.

Technics Class A? I've a feeling you might mean "New Class AA"!

For any who are either interested in what Technics called "New Class A" amplifiers, or are a bit bored...

My standard house party rig is a pair of DAS Sub18s as they are a similar volume but take less floorspace than my DIY ported 12"!! Which they themselves are on the smaller side of 12" cabs. They also take less floor space than tripods so ideal for a sub/sat setup. If size isn't a concern then I usually take a pair of my 12" subs LOL

Anyways never not had enough bass for a house party. Including currently on a range of queer techno club nights happening in people's houses with about 150 guests.

I guess if this is your music type, 1x12" reflex on sub, might suffice for a house party !! LOL

Ha ha! Clap

I’m over 50, and despite my love of speakers (and bass), I’m a responsible homeowner these days - it’s all very sensible.

Maybe I should get a pair of Mach 2’s for the nostalgia Wink

Even better,  try pair of JBL M350, replace 15" with PD158.
Will need to slightly widen cutout, with disc grinder.

Power them with, Peavey GPS3400, or JBL MPX1200 or Crown MA3600VZ
Klark Teknik DN360 for Eq.

Mouth, dribbling.. Nuff said.

Quote Yeah, i guess we all different views on what constitutes a house party

A party in a house no? A lot of systems recommended on here seem overkill to me too. I am curious what size houses some members of this forum hold their parties in, and how far they are from their neighbours. In most urban locations even the single 12” cabinet described in this thread is excessive. Do they not give a shit about people who live close by, or is it a case of wanting large cabinets because they look impressive rather than actually needing the full performance?

Back to the more technical aspect. Assuming that a single cabinet solution can contain multiple drive units, the following plots show the maximum output from four different cabinets.

The bottom graph shows the single 12” in a 40 litre cabinet, with an output of approx 119dB down to 40Hz and a -3dB at about 35Hz.

Next graph up, with just over 3dB more output is the PD186 in the cabinet shown of 183 litres. Obviously bigger speaker, bigger, better, output, therefore much better party. But is an extra 3dB with a cabinet more than 4 times the size worth it?

If that extra few dB output of the single 18” is critical to get the party vibe going, but in a more compact cabinet, the next graph up shows the output from a 2 x 12” cabinet at 80 litres. So a couple of dB more than the 18” driver in a cabinet less than half the size.

If the visual impact of the larger cabinet is a must for party pleasure, the top graph is for a 4 x 12” cabinet of 160 litres. Still slightly physically smaller than the single 18” design, but with 8dB greater output at 40Hz you probably won’t be able to hear complaints from disgruntled attendees who were hoping for at least an 18” drive unit”

Quote Pretty sure the q12 called for a big boost at tuning frequency,

According to an early thread, minimal eq needed.

If I remember correctly, this was a modified version of  A. M. Sandman’s class S (presumably S for Sandman) design. The circuit description was discussed in Wireless World back in mid 1970s and again in the early 80s. It is also mentioned in the book Audio Electronics by John Lindsey Hood. It is quite a while ago now, but I believe that amplifier quiescent current is automatically adjusted during the output cycle with the aim of keeping the output stages operating, effectively, in 'class A', but without the thermal dissipation penalty normally incurred by class A.

And do these houses contain no furniture, decorations or other household accoutrements?
I can't run my home system up past 90dB at the sofa without glasses and plates trying to evacuate the cupboards with haste...

WOW… SR Technology… that’s brings back a few nightmares from about 20 years ago ... you must have been luckey and got a good one!!

I used to do the service work for a music store that sold SR, about 75% would be faulty out of the box, we concluded they didn’t have a QC department!!
Example, we had a batch of the little 8” powered speakers (I can’t remember the model but JAM 150 rings a bell) they arrived with the hole in the plate amp being too large for the push fit IEC socket so if you pushed the connector in hard the socket would disappear inside the case exposing the live terminals on the fuse holder and mains power switch.
Another time we had a batch of powered 3-way speakers that would go unstable when warm with the bass cone oscillating at around 20hz, this would continue until the speaker shut down due to thermal protection, was either turned off or something died….

However, when working they sounded good, and with a little more production engineering and decent QC they could have been a very good product.

In the end the store stopped selling them.

I've seen a few systems recently where the pair of tops fit into the horn mouth of a single bass bin. That seems to me to be the ultimate in compact transportation for a similar system, if you can heft the weight!

I use 12" drivers in my house system, JBL2206 to be exact but there are eight of them running off a QSC RMX4050 it hustles.

Have seen ohm trs in a kitchen a few times Cry in the past in a red brick terrace.

HK impact has a 12 on bass was very good at a house party. Modern 12 designs can be super efficiency theses days.

Winter project for me will be fane 18xb  in a b&c sub 18 and pair  of Martin aq8 on mid top. Will be good for a mini system. I doubt it will end up in a kitchen or house party. Might end as DJ monitors a couple of time lol.

Incidentally the bass speakers in my post above are for sale if anyone's interested?
Each box is loaded with a pair of JBL2206 drivers (8 ohms)
I'm looking for £1000 for them but they could do with some tidying up as these were instal boxes. The mid highs are not for sale
Im based in south east London
