Hi.
I've been running the 1st prototype of the opus cs850 for a couple of years now, to good effect. my own hyper-critical criticism of them would be that the high mid & top are fractionally too loud, in that they run about -6dB on the opus amps, compared to the bass which runs at 0dB, which is fine, but i've got a theory that if the speakers were quieter I could run the amps louder, and closer to the limit, so with live music I could rely on the opus amps' limiter to sort out any 'loud bits' in the live music & do away with comp/limiters on a lot of the channels.
Also, the low mid is not really having it on the CS's. I've overcome that up to now by running a 2x15
'wheelie bin' per side (sometimes 2) up to 180 Hz, and running central subs up to 80Hz.
so, a possible solution:
just one high mid cone per box instead of 2, custom engineered to become a duel concentric for the stunning new opus 1.4" comp. Then both top. (without it's horn) & hi mid should be somewhere around 3dB quieter.
then, as they're both so much smaller, there's space for 2 x 10" bass/low mid cones beneath them. a 3 way box. probably end up passive between the hi mid & top.
here's the 1st one next to a CS850, and also 2 x single cone low mid boxes to compare drivers & compare ported vs sealed.
just waiting for some more samples to turn up.

also had the idea (thanks mykey) of rounding the fronts to minimise edge diffraction, and to make the internals more cylindrical, cylinders being 2nd best to spherical.

I'm not going to go into the drivers used, 2 of them are oem's anyway, at least not for the moment, but it's quite an interesting idea for the diyer as duel concs can be bought complete, and a simpler trap box could be an easy build for anyone.
more to follow after driver & box shape listening tests.

how are you planing on wireing the sub!!. . . . . . .
1 driver would be at 8ohms
2 drivers would be at 4ohms
3 drivers would be ar 2ohms

but at 2 ohms is it stable?? or is their another way of wireing

3 8 ohm drivers would be 2.7ohms.... 3 x 16 ohm drivers in parallel would be 5.3 ohms or so though...

from what i read, he is going to have the new midtops two way active (with a passive split between the midhi and comp).

looks like a lovely concept, and i love the rebated edges, scherical internals etc... Cant wait to hear the finished product.

ps: i really do love your cottage jody, such a nice location and building Smile

^ what he says.
4 ohms 'bass' (low mid)
8 ohms hi mid
8 ohms HF.

not sure about passive or active mid tops yet. with active it's easier to do time allignment, although it might not be necessary with a duel conc.

with 3 tops a side I should be able to run the 3 passive mid tops off one channel and 3 channels of low mid. this is where the split amps come in useful.
1250/500
1250/1250

or maybe a 1250 channel for the duel concs if it needs any more welly.

if i run it active, then
low mid           1250/500     HF
2 x low mid     2500/1250   hi mid

still waiting for cones Cry .

Temporarily on the back burner, due to not yet finding a 10" high bass cone to die for. also, there's a bit of a carpet crisis going on, ABTT show on now (theatre), 2 touring rigs & a club install in London to build, aaand festival chaos.
I've accepted now that they aren't going to be ready for this season, so I'm just doing the odd 1/2 hour on them at the end of the days work, & looking for more cones.

10 inch,
400/500w,
more than 96dB eff at 100Hz,
60Hz - 500Hz,
copper coil (or copper clad),
neo magnet.

any ideas i haven't thought of?

Faital Pro have some tasty ones that might fit the bill, if you can get them.  Not sure on coil material, but they have models bettwen 3-700watt, good xmax and suitable efficiency.

Wow, blast from the past.

You're welcome to the dimensions, but they were based around a custom, one off PHL cone (minimum order 20x)

PITA to build Big smile haha
