A while ago I was in Ethiopia for a 2 week visit, I saw some amazing electrics:
This was in a building which had multiple small businesses: ![]() ![]() Something I saw in a bar: ![]() And more disturbingly, the 'shower' my girlfriend had been using for months (the water is heated in the showerhead): ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Some of these are funny, but that shower head is just genuinely terrifying >.<

I know we all moan and complain about regs sometimes but the above pics show why they're there... well, some of them anyway!

yep, too true Djeddie
That shower rose water heater contraption, how on earth will it heat water quick enough? it would have to be as hot as the sun for the speed water will travel through it. What a very silly 3rd world design. |

that showerhead thing is mental! Wouldnt catch me anywhere near that!!!
on the other hand, 22.5amps should be enough power in a hot country to warm water up on the fly, isnt much less then UK showers. Strange old design though, something tells me ill never see one of them in the UK!! |

Not really concerned with electrics but seeing the map of Spain reminded me of the time I was in Madrid doing a speaker exhibition, and inside the building, people were erecting their stands. Someone had an angle grinder cutting some steel tubes, this seemed so intense as flames were more or less shooting right across the gangway, and landing straight on a pile of polystyrene packaging. No one was batting an eyelid. My thoughts were, only in Spain.

My father in law is Spanish, I've pulled him up on some pretty shocking wiring round his house. Like the neutrals commoned behind a lightswitch by just twisting them together. Or the electric fire being powered off a very neatly coiled and cable tied length of 0.75mm cable - a more effective heater than the appliance itself! There's plenty more! |

Mykey, you are assuming there is actually water pressure thats gets anything close to a decent shower. Taking showers in Addis Ababa consists of timing between actually having power and actually having some water pressure. ![]() Edit: schpehling Edited by Tedski - 01 June 2012 at 1:49am |

You can actually work it out, I remember this from school physics (a very long time ago). The specific heat capacity of water is approx 4.2 joules per gram per degree C, in other words a 4200 watt heater (100% efficient) would raise the temperature of 1 litre of water by 1 degree C in 1 second. |
